Calvin Johnson runs a 4.33 in the 40

Calvin Johnson, preparing for the league's scouting combine in Indianapolis next week, was clocked at 4.33 in the 40. He also recorded an 11-foot standing broad jump and had a vertical leap of 43 inches.

While Johnson might not be the first player chosen, he is clearly separating himself as the top player in the 2007 NFL draft. Johnson is a rare talent. He is 6'-4", 234 pounds, and runs a 4.33 40 yard dash!

His combination of size, speed, hands, intelligence and work ethic are unheard of at the receiver position. Think Randy Moss talent with a Marvin Harrison work ethic. In fact Johnson is actually 25 pounds bigger then Moss and if the 4.33 - 40 is accurate, just as fast.

I dont know if this is legit though. You know innacurate people are when timing guys. We will see at the combine, still amazing for a guy his size.

Whoa wouldn't that be nice if the Vikings actually traded up to get C.Johnson! It doesn't matter who the QB is next year for the Vikes he will instantly make him better and improve the run game with the defense having to game plan around him. But is Childress smart enough to get him? Who knows...

easily the best player in this draft...he won't go number 1...i see that as being Russel's spot, but he will most deffenitly make a large splash in the NFL immediately...

Thats crazy he doesnt run a 4.33. He will probably run a 4.48. Everyone hypes him up. I bet is 3 cone and short shuttle will be bad because of his stiffness. he is a straight line runner.

Thiss helps his draft stock. Like I said before, he'll be drafted first overall by the Raiders because he's an all in one player.

This guy is amazing. I hope he doesn't get picked by the raiders. He needs to go somewhere where he can live up to his full potential.

WR's don't turn around teams, especially ones picking top ten...see: Charles Rogers (2), Roy Williams (7), Mike Williams (10). Maybe the Vikings can be just as successful as the Lions!

He's is very fast and a workout fiend. It really wouldnt suprise me if he gets a 4.35 40 in the combine. He's very fluid... uh... anonymous... and has every physical attribute. If he improves his route running, he's a top ten WR... of all time.

After seeing what he can do with someone as bad as Reggie Ball for 3 years it is going to be amazing to see what he has to offer when he gets someone that can actually throw the ball to him.

If he tests like this at the combine, he doesn't make it past #4 - no way, no how. That would be a freakishly rare combo of size/speed.

If the Raiders don't draft him they're crazy! He's the BEST WR prospect EVER!! Yes better than Moss, better than Fitz. If the Raiders draft Russell he won't play anyway, and they will be picking top 5 again next year. If they draft C.J. this year they can get Brohm next year. You have to draft the best player with the #1 pick, and C.J is that guy. He is Moss, and T.O. without the baggage!

Vikings fan, I can see the Browns trading down with the Vikings, from 3 to 7, only if the Browns win the coin toss. If the Buccaneers win the toss, it will not matter because they will take Johnson at 3. Petersen should still be available at 7 if the trade occurs.

That isn't true about johnson being as fast as randy. At least not when randy came into the league. When randy was in the draft process and in his first years in the league he was at the 4.2 level, one of only a few players at that speed, including the great darrell green.

No, Moss doesn't run a 4.2. Before the 1998 draft he was rumored to have run a 4.25 during his short time at Florida State.

However, during a private pre-draft work-out (he skipped the combine) he was hand timed around 4.35-4.39.

If CJ truly ran a 4.33, they have almost identical speed.

man .. interesting dilemma for the raiders, they can either go Quinn, Russell, Peterson or Johnson, all of whom i believe are worthy of the #1 pick.

Quinn - Would be able to start right away, Al Davis has said he was disappointed to pass up on Leinart.

Russell - Will take longer to develop, (might have to bench for a year) as his decision making is sometimes a bit =\

Peterson - Would start right away, esp with Knapp as OC we might see some 2 RB combination like in Atlanta with Dunn and Norwood (we might get Lynch in the later rounds if we pass on Peterson)

Johnson - With the question marks surrounding Porter and Moss (i think Porter will stay), I would prefer this option myself .. picking Johnson and getting Lynch later, can't pass on a player this talented, esp with one with soo little baggage.

Did someone just put him in the Top 10 of all time ALREADY! Easy now! All those other 1st rd bust still haven't had anyone to throw them the ball. Is Colston that good, or is Brees that good? I'll go with Brees. Calvin is an incredible athlete though.

why does everyone act like a 4.33 is THAT fast? anyone know of a guy by the name of vernon davis? he's about 6'3, 253 and can run the 40 about .05 slower, AND HE'S A FREAKING TIGHT END! eat that cj

If this has any truth too it, Jon Gruden and staff will be keeping a good Eye on this guy they are replacing nearly their entire roster, This guy could be very dangerous, and Cadillac Williams could easily be trade bait, But i hope he stays out of the NFC South if Saints don't get him Im a Saints fan and a guy like that could Embarrass some teams.

But i bet Bucs are gonna go after em

Well speed isn't everything (Willie Gault actually ran a 4.0 in the 80's), but when you are 4.3 with the type of hands and height that CJ has, he could be unstoppable and will always force a double team.

I played against Johnson in College. No way 4.33 more like 4.48 forty yard dash. Ted Ginn is the only 4.33 guy

Willie Gault never ran a 4.0. That is humanly impossible. He would literally be the fastest man who ever lived, by a large margin.

Even if Johnson doesnt have "4.3 speed", and its in the 4.4 range, he is still going to be an incredible matchup problem. 4.4 isnt slow, and with his size, strength and hands, he is still going to be impossible to defend for most secondaries.

Remeber, even though Moss did score on some big ones using his speed to flat out burn the opposing secondary, if you talk to ANY defensive coordinator who played him, theyd say the biggest thing they feared about Moss was his endzone presence. Johnson has excellent leaping ability and is a similiar size to Moss. Keep that in mind.

I say the Raiders should draft Calvin Johnson. They Should then trade Moss and a 3rd rounder for either David Carr or one of the Jaguar QB's. Then use the rest of the draft to get whatever quality is available. They are in a rare spot to need help in every offensive position all at once, so anything they get will pretty much help.

well the combine is over and johnson ran a 4.35 so he is that fast. he is like a mix of moss in terms of speed and t.o. in terms of strength and moves.
