Browns desperate to draft Peterson

According to John McClain of the Houston Chronicle, someone "well-connected" with the Browns has convinced him that they want Adrian Peterson desperately.

We are still a long way from the draft and this could be a smokescreen, but the top of the draft is starting to take shape. The Raiders are rumored to want JaMarcus Russell, the Lions - Joe Thomas and now the Browns - Peterson.

Sounds like a no-brainer to me. Could end up being the best pick in the draft if they do take him. Peterson round 1, Troy Smith round 2.

It might be a no-brainer, except for the fact that he is injury prone (see history at oklahoma and scouts' comments on his upright running style) and the O-line is a mess... but i dont really have a problem with it, as his talent could trump all of that... seems like a stand-up character guy too.

Peterson would be the next Gale Sayers. He is a big back, 6'2. He is a threat to rush for 2,000 yards a season. The Browns have to find away to avoid another Houston Texans problem in not taking the hometown hero (Vince Young) so they need to find away to take Troy Smith in round 2.

Example Browns Draft 1---
Rd 1. Adrian Peterson
Rd 2. Troy Smith
Rd 3. Steve Smith (USC)

Example Browns Draft 2---
Rd 1. Ted Ginn
Rd 2. Troy Smith
Rd 3. Darius Walker

Example Browns Draft 3---
Rd 1. Adrian Peterson
Rd 2. Anthony Gonzales
Rd 3. Jordan Palmer

Antonio Pittmann is a prospect also

AP in the 1st round, Troy Smith in the 2nd is as good as it can get for the Browns. They'll replace two scrubs in Rueben and Charlie/Derek. Speed up the middle with AP K2 and Brsylon on the outside. THE BROWNS ARE COMING!!!

No Troy Smith early... w/out an o-line he'll be on his back just like almost any qb behind our current line. Rnd1 trade down with Houston, take Levi Brown at 8 ,gain a 2nd (ideal) or rb Adrian Peterson, Rnd2 OL/DL(Best Available), Rnd3 Smith if he is still there or best OL/DL. How many good RB's in the NFL aren't very good w/out a decent o-line? How many mediocre backs get by with a good o-line?

AP could be the pick that turns this team in the right direction. Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly, Ernie Green, Mike Pruitt, Kevin Mack, Ernest Byner were the legends that made the Browns special. Combine this with some hogs who can open holes, and Charlie Frye won't be under so much pressure. AP - great pick. When can I purchase Peterson's Browns' jersey?

Did anyone watch the national championship game?? The biggest thing to adjust to in the nfl is the speed of the game and in case you missed it Troy Smith looked like a deer in headlights to a "fast" Florida team and you want him in round two? Round four maybe. Peterson in the first, Sears in the second and more lineman the rest of the way. Something tells me Troy will be out of footbal in 3 years. Sign Carr instead of drafting Smith.

At least Troy got a taste of what playing for the Browns would be like when he was running for his life against Florida. Pick the linemen first, then consider what is available in rd 3, then pick more trench guys or dbs

How about this fellow Browns fans?
How about DT Alan Branch to go along with Wimbley and Jackson? Are problems aren't playmakers, it's our O-line and D-line. Without that, we can't win.

How bout this Browns Fans, trade down a few spots, get an extra RD 2 pick. Best O-line/D-line, Micheal Bush(sure shot AFC Central bruiser), Troy or Steve Smith.

Peterson would be a great pick, but there are some other backs that could be picked in later rounds. Like Pittman from Ohio State or Hunt from Penn State. Both of whom had great senior seasons and proved they can carry the workload. This would allow the Browns to go O-line early or possibly to big Calvin Johnson to complement Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow.

February 9, 2007 12:35:00 PM EST

Hope that means the Lions can rob a high pick out of them, like when the Browns HAD to have Kellen Winslow and gave the Lions their 2nd rd pick to move up 1 spot!!

This is how it should be. Sign Eric Steinbach, and either Nate Clements or Asante Samuels in Free Agency. Then it's Peterson with the pick. Romeo's on the hot seat this year and has got to win. He's got to get impact players that play right away. That's why they won't draft a qb here. The rest of the picks or o or d line.

The Texans realized last year how big of a mistake it is to pass up on a franchise running back, Ap despite his injuries is the real deal, the best player in this draft. Troy smith in the second round would be amazing for the Browns local boy, you have at least 7, 000 more tickets sold to each game with thos two players in the lineup, and it will save Romeo's jpb. Bently Back resign Fraley, then you got Edwards, K2, JJ, AP, and Troy smith, thats the playoffs in 2 or 3 right there

Forget T. Smith, he is no good for the Browns, too small. Take Russell first, he can actually get the ball downfield and he is big enough to stand behind a bad line. Get Bush in round 2 and then take OL/DL the rest of the way.

Bentley is gonna be out for most, if not all of next year too... Frye is a stiff, Anderson might be ok. There corners blow, Baxter is dead, Bodden is always gimped and out, Daylon hell I have no clue but he sucked anyway. They need another corner, Dline, Oline, RB and QB, maybe another WR.

But I would not pass out AP...

Lots a decent ideas for my team. Heres the best bet. Sign the following free-agents:
OG Steinbach, CB Nate Clements, Bears rb Adrian Peterson. Droughns moves BACK to FB. Trade Charlie Frye to someone for a 2 or 3 draft pick. Trade Next Years First Round pick and whatever we get for Frye for a top 10 pick this year or frye and next years first rd pick. Then its just deciding who to pick. With 2 top ten picks. Alan Branch and Peterson Or Brady Quinn (from OH), and Peterson, Or something similar depending on who they aquire during Free Agency. Remember Coach has to win this season or the man that signs the checks will get pressure from the fans and collegues. Giving up a 1 next year would be worth it. It will be easy to get it back by trading baxter or Russell(though i hope he stays, great leader)and making some other moves maybe trading droughns and letting vickers start. Coach Tucker can teach an old lady how to cover. So DB won't be a concern. Minter is going to be a sick in few years. Must win year trade next years pick like theres no tomorrow. or there won't be. Our Depth Chart next year.

WR- B. Easy (Edwards),Jurevicius, Wilson, Cribbs
TE- Is there any Question
RB- Peterson,Peterson
FB- Droughns, Vickers
OT-Butler, Shaffer
OG- Steinbach, Bentley
C - Fraley, smith
QB -??? Anderson, Frye, Quinn, please Not Troy Smith, Leak, your guess is almost as good as mine.

DL-Roye(the ageless one), Washington, Oshinowo, Harris, Branch
ILB-Davis, Jackson
OLB-Wimbley, Williams, McGinest.
CB- Clements,Bodden,McCutcheon, Minter, Holly
SS-Jones, Hamilton(oould move back to RB in a pinch)
FS-Pool, Russell
K, P Who the H3!! Care!!!

trade down with texans. draft DT Branch rd 1, DE Carriker and OT Staley rd 2 OG Beckman rd 3. (if Smit is available in 4 take a chance)
Sign A. Samuel, M. Turner, E. Steinbach
O line: Shaffer, steinbach, fraley (keepin it warm for LaChuck), beckman, staley
D line: carriker, branch, roye with mckinley, washington, fraser for depth
FROM WORST 2 FIRST!

I am not sure that QB's Frye, Dorsey or Alexander deserve to be on Arena League rosters ! Brady Quinn is the smart choice.

Peterson has been injury prone the last two years. The bottom line is that you need to dominate the line of scrimmage in the NFL. I am pretty sure the Lions will take Thomas. So Quinn becomes the smart pick.
Barring a draft day miracle where the Browns could snag Russell, Quinn is the best answer. With all the wide receivers in this draft, trading down and acquiring picks would help.
If Quinn is "slipping" it make sense to try and work the phones.
The Browns have multiple needs. Their defense has been been a joke almost every year since they came back into the league. Trading down and picking a top defensive player also makes sense.

All this "pick petersen" hype is a backlash from the year that the Browns passed on LT. Arguably one of the stupidest moves in draft history. Missing on Mcnabb for Couch ranks second. Quinn is from Ohio and has the talent. I think after the combine Petersen will slide in the top ten. I'd love to get Russell. It wont happen. Thomas makes the most sense for a team that hasnt had a real star lineman since they returned. It wont happen. If the Browns end up picking 4th and Russell, Thomas and Quinn are gone. I would go defense and trade down.

Peterson should be the pick, but stranger things have happened. The dude is a freak of nature. Droughns could be moved to fullback which is his natural position. That Winslow pick from a few years back didn't turn out to be a bad pick either. The Browns still had a second rounder and drafted Sean Jones who is no slouch.

I like this but I would seem Russell #1 is likely, #2 Lions should draft Joe Thomas but remember the recent OT's drafted #2: Robert Gallery and Leonard Davis, BUSTS! They might look elsewhere and take? Jamaal Anderson, Alan Branch or Gaines Adams I would really consider or trade their pick so someone can take: Adrian Peterson ahead of the Browns or Calvin Johnson ahead of the Bucs? the Lions need more defensive help and drafting either of the 3 or trading down and still getting one of those 3 is a must. Arizona should do this, since they need line help? Joe Thomas to the Cardinals and the Lions pick up #5, Alan Branch and JJ Arrington in case Kevin Jones is hurt, and add a so called: Kevin Jones and JJ Arrington attack. I like this more.

Two words; Eric Steinbach. Two more words; Nate Clements. The Browns must land one if not both of these Free Agents. As for the draft go with the best overall talent in the 1st. If Quinn is there, draft him. If Quinn is gone, take Peterson. Pull a NYJets in 06 (Mangold/Ferguson) go O-line in the 2nd and 3rd AND START THEM. Anyone who thinks we need Troy Smith (especially in the 2nd!!) should have their head examined. Damn townies.

peterson would be the best prospect for the browns to draft. free agency is where you get good and proven o-lineman. a runningback like adrian peterson only comes around once in a great while. troy smith will do fine with the speed of the nfl. he is the fastest most athletic qb in the draft. he looked bad in the BCS game because he sat out 50 some games and lost his go to guy on the opening play. Ginn jr. take him if available in round 2. JJ and Edwards are good recievers. Rueben would be an amazing short yard back. bentley will be back at center and fraley could play gaurd. steinbach would be nice in FA to pick up. go offense with the first two picks and then work on the d line. get depth at NT because T.W. cant play like he used to. Free agency is where seasons are made. I think peterson would be the BEST and in my opinion only option for the browns. i would also like to see the browns go for a shutdown corner. asante samuel would be an amazing pick up. i liked the veteran pick ups last year with Willie mac and T.W. but they are getting older by the game. Samuel had 10 int this season and would work nice opposite baxter. i am a pretty big browns fan as you can tell and i would love to see peterson picked. everything you want to see happen never does though.

Ok heres the real solution to the browns issues... take Brady Quinn in the first, he's a big name that will draw fans... In the second round take Michael Bush hes a top 15 talent if not for the injuries and he can do it all... In the third take either David Irons the best man cover corner in the draft, Dan Bazuin a sleeper DE from Central Michigan whos a stud pass rusher or the best OL available... In the free agency target Nate Clements and Eric Steinbach

OT, DL is all ill take, joe thomas if he falls or trade down for alan branch. you have to have an 0-line to run behind so peterson is out.

I dont think Romeo and Savage want to risk their "possible last year" on a newb QB unless he's big ben rookie like, and how often does that come. I would love to see Quinn for the Browns.

Rd 1- Joe Thomas
Rd 2- Antonio Pittman

THE REST: CB's and OT's

The Browns despite their recent patheticness HAVE NEVER and WILL NEVER have a problem "drawing fans" so please don't try to appease us by drafting Brady Quinn.
The best draft would be Peterson in the first. A Ross CB/PR or a power OG in the second. T. Smith or OL/DL prospect in the third.
The second day literally don't draft anyone under 300 lbs... Throw some big chunks of mud on the wall... some of it will stick!!!
