Tebow made an early impact for the Gators as a true freshman, but not in a passing sense. He threw for 338 yards and five touchdowns, but his real impact was on the ground. He was a glorified short yardage back for the Gators, rushing for 469 yards and eight touchdowns. The season he put together as a sophomore was truly amazing. He became the first ever sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy after passing for 3,286 yards and 32 touchdowns with just six interceptions, while completing over 66% of his passes. On the ground he ran for 895 yards and an amazing 23 touchdowns.
Strengths
Tebow is a great two way threat in college football. He has good size, is a good athlete, and is very tough. He has the arm to project to the next level. His rushing ability and production is excellent for a QB. He has good speed for a QB, and has the athleticism to make things happen when the play breaks down or if the run is designed for him. Tebow is tough and strong, and will put his head down on runs to pick up tough yardage. He has handled an extreme amount of pressure very well, and is a player that will do what it takes to get the job done.
Weaknesses
The rushing numbers Tebow puts up in college will not translate to the NFL. He has too many designed runs, and no team in the league is going to call them for their franchise QB. It opens him up for an extra beating and at the pro level, that is not going to happen. As a passer, he needs work. He can be a little erratic throwing the ball despite his high completion percentage. Tebow is a good runner so he looks to run too often and needs to learn to sit in the pocket longer to let pass plays develop.
Future
Tebow is an excellent college player, but he may receive more attention than he deserves as a pro prospect at this point. He plays in a gimmick offense that is more geared for college success than developing as a pro passer. He receives a lot of hype for his rushing totals, but the type of runs he has will not happen in the NFL. He doesn’t pick up yardage on the ground like Vince Young or Michael Vick did. Tebow does have the talent to play in the NFL, but he will need to continue to work on his passing skills to reach his potential.
