Offensive Line
Alan Faneca left Pittsburgh to sign elsewhere as expected, and with other questions surrounding an offensive line unit that has depreciated in terms of the amount of talent available, the team has needs to fill in order to combat the possibility of a drop-off when it comes to production. Finishing third in rushing yards was an important reason for the Steelers’ success in ’07, and if they want to continue to build upon that success in ’08, they have to find additional offensive line help.
Cornerback
At cornerback, Ike Taylor played much better in 2007, if not great. Pittsburgh may still look to acquire a true shutdown style corner to free Troy Polamalu up at safety. The Steelers allowed the second fewest points and fewest yards per game, but they can still improve the talent at the cornerback position by using an early draft pick to provide speed and athleticism to the position.
Wide Receiver
At wide receiver, Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes make for a good pair, but adding a third receiver to prepare behind Holmes should be a goal. Ward would benefit from having some attention taken away from him and another legitimate receiving threat would help reduce his workload in an effort to limit the wear and tear on him. Also, Holmes’ recent battles with injuries are reason enough to add depth.
Defensive Line
The Steelers also need to look for pass-rushing help off of the ends. Brett Keisel and Aaron Smith are the current starting pair, but that could change if the Steelers find a talented end during the draft. A young athlete with a nose for the quarterback would be a nice addition to a tem known for its defensive prowess and production. If Pittsburgh can find an end in the draft who can earn playing time right away, they’ll be in a much better position.
