Defensive Line
Defensive tackle Brian Young is now 31, while the team’s other starting defensive tackle, Hollis Thomas, is 33. The Saints would benefit not only from the standpoint of adding depth behind aging veterans, but also from the fact that they could use a run-stopping tackle to keep offenses from controlling games on the ground. New Orleans need young talent at the position, that can spell Young and Thomas at times and begin making his own impact on the league. The Saints first-round pick may very well be the answer to this need.
Defensive Back
The secondary also requires additional help. Jason David was a disappointment at the cornerback position, and he’ll look to improve upon last season. Mike McKenzie is still recovering from a torn ACL, so his health is a definite concern as the team heads prepares for next season. The signing of Randall Gay was a nice move from a needs standpoint, but there are still questions in regards to the talent depth at the position and with McKenzie’s injury, the Saints will look to further improve the cornerback position. At safety, Josh Bullocks has not played consistently enough for the team to have confidence in him. The Saints might spend a middle-round pick on a corner as well as a safety who can come in and challenge for Bullocks’ job.
Linebacker
The Saints might also look to upgrade talent at the linebacker spot. The acquisition of Jonathan Vilma via trade was an excellent move to improve this unit. Then the team went out and signed Dan Morgan. With Scott Fujita and Mark Simoneau back, it seems the unit has experience and talent, but the team could still benefit from finding a young talent to develop behind Scott Shanle on the outside, or a young talent who can begin earning playing time right away. The need isn’t dire, but it could become an issue if the Saints decide to wait too much longer.
