Defensive Line
Oakland was 31st in rushing yards allowed per game and the problem starts with the defensive line. The tackle group included Warren Sapp, who was ineffective against the run along with the rest. With Sapp having retired, the tackle spot gets even weaker and still needs help if they want to improve against opponents’ rushing attack. On the end, Tommy Kelly may not be the long-term answer and there is a lack of depth as well. An early draft pick could be spent to acquire a stud tackle or a defensive end to help shore up the run defense somewhat.
Offensive Line
Offensively, the line continues to be an issue. There was improvement in ’07, but given the disaster of the previous season, improvement wasn’t hard to come by. Kwame Harris was signed in an effort to add depth at the left tackle position, but to really improve, the Raiders could look to draft a player like Jake Long with their top pick in the draft. If Oakland doesn’t go defense, they’ll likely make a pick to help this need.
Wide Receiver
Wide receiver depth is solid for Oakland, but the talent is questionable. Jerry Porter is now gone, and the team will look to replace him with Javon Walker. Walker’s health concerns don’t instill complete confidence at the position. If Walker misses time, Drew Carter and Johnnie Lee Higgins would be asked to fill in and make plays. The Raiders seem to like late-round receivers, so the team will likely make that move in the draft if they find a player they like.
