Cornerback
The team was in the top five in nearly every significant defensive category, but they also benefited from a high-powered offense, helping those numbers to probably be inflated slightly. Cornerback Asante Samuel had another strong season and he hit the market to find several interested teams. He signed in Philadelphia, opening up a sizable hole in the New England defensive backfield. It is a major loss in the secondary, especially when coupled with the fact that another cornerback, Randall Gay, signed elsewhere also. The cornerback position is priority one for the Patriots.
Linebacker
The age at the linebacker spot is of concern. Tedy Bruschi will need to eventually be replaced, and Mike Vrabel isn’t getting any younger either. There will have to be young talent added here in order to ensure that New England doesn’t miss a beat defensively. The position simply needs youth, options for the future, and a player who can make an impact when called upon to spell veterans or play alongside them.
Offensive Line
With injury and inexperience at the offensive guard position, and a lack of talented depth overall on the line, New England could look to add some pieces at the draft with an eye on the future. The current group of starters may stay intact heading into the season, but backups who can come in and play at a similar level will be a bonus for an already strong offense.
