Defensive Line
The play from the defensive end position was sub-par, and with Bobby McCray leaving while Paul Spicer heads into his mid-30s, Jacksonville has to look for new players to take care of the pass rushing duties. The defense was average in the sack department; the lack of pressure on opposing quarterbacks further enforced the notion that an end needs to be drafted. The team could use their first-round selection to try and ease the need at this position.
Defensive Back
With Gerald Sensabaugh listed as the current starting strong safety, it’s hard to imagine a scenario in which the Jaguars do nothing to address the position. A draft pick could be spent to bring additional talent into the mix. Simply creating a competitive situation for the job may be an ideal situation for the players and the team. Another option would be to move Brian Williams from the cornerback spot to the safety position, thus creating a need for depth at cornerback; with the draft being deep at corner, this wouldn’t be an unwise move. Rashean Mathis and Drayton Florence give Jacksonville a strong one-two combination, but depth would still be needed to keep the defensive unit quite strong in the secondary.
Offensive Line
The offensive line played quite well throughout this past season, allowing quarterback David Garrard time to be effective. The line also helped open holes for the running success of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew, but even still, depth needs to be added. There is a lack of talent after the starters, and the team can look towards developing talent for the future sooner rather than later.
Linebacker
Jacksonville might also look to beef up the linebacker unit by using the draft to find athletic players who can track the ball. The position can improve in the depth department, but the team might also find a gem somewhere along the way to step in and make plays right away. The Jaguars could take a linebacker early and fill other needs later on if the right player falls to them.
