Linebacker
The defense needs linebacker talent due to the loss of Kawika Mitchell and Reggie Torbor in free agency. An outside linebacker to compliment players like Mathias Kiwanuka and Antonio Pierce is a necessity, but the Giants may wait until the middle rounds to draft a linebacker because of their needs at other positions that might be worth addressing early on.
Safety
The Giants have to add a player who can start at the safety position. James Butler would be the starter if the season started today, but with the draft looming, a player like Kenny Phillips may be an interesting prospect for the front office and coaching staff. A safety who can come in and make plays with athleticism would be a nice addition to a defensive unit that performed admirably last season and will look to do so again even with the personnel losses that have happened.
Offensive Line
New York can add a left tackle, which would allow them to move David Diehl back to the guard position, where he is a better fit. He did a solid job at tackle as the Giants won the Super Bowl, but if the team wants to get even better, they could make this move. They may wait on it and chance it with Diehl in the same role once again. The line is fairly solid as it is, but a top-notch tackle would likely make for an overpowering unit.
Wide Receiver
Also on the offensive side of the ball, the wide receiver position will be a hot topic at the draft. Amani Toomer played well this past season, but it’s tough to say how much he has left in him. Plaxico Burress will need a sidekick to work with shortly, regardless. With Steve Smith still developing, there’s a sizable talent dip after the top two receivers. A mid-round pick will probably be used to acquire a player the team feels can step in and earn some playing time.
