Linebacker
The Colts will look to add depth to a linebacker unit that includes a pair of expiring contracts in the next two years. Tyjuan Hagler was signed for one season and Gary Brackett will hit the market once the ’09 season ends. There is also a lack of depth at the position, forcing the Colts to address that aspect of the defense. A mid-round or early draft pick might even be the route the team takes to address it.
Offensive Line
The departure of guard Jake Scott was a bad blow for the offensive line unit, and when you consider that center Jeff Saturday is nearing his mid-30s and will soon be a free agent himself, it’s evident that Indianapolis must weight their options regarding the offensive line. More than one draft pick may go towards adding depth and a stable future for the center and guard positions, especially.
Defensive Line
At defensive end, Josh Thomas has been re-signed to add critical depth to the defensive line stable, and Robert Mathis returns alongside star pass-rusher Dwight Freeney. However, Freeney’s recent injury history puts the team in a position to draft an end who can fill in when needed. The main concern is that of depth.
Wide Receiver
At the wide receiver position, Marvin Harrison’s age (will turn 33 prior to the season) and injury-ruined season create the need to find more receiving options for the high-powered offensive unit. Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez are skilled, but Harrison was an integral part to the Colts’ success in past seasons. Quarterback Peyton Manning needs to be assured of depth in case Harrison or another receiver is injured again.
