They just said on AM 1270 that Shaun Rogers has been suspended 4 games for violating the substance abuse policy. They said that they think its something that he took over the counter, but I don't have a link or anything yet.

Shaun Rogers suspended for four games
Detroit Lions tackle Shaun Rogers has been suspended for four games by the NFL for testing positive for a banned substance. Sources close to the situation say it was not an illegal drug.

The Lions have a bye week coming up next week, but that won't be a factor because Rogers must miss four games (without pay).

Rogers is not believed to be in the league's substance abuse program and this suspension does not necessarily mean he's been hit with a "third strike.'' Instead, as in previous cases with Jim Miller and Julius Peppers, a positive test for a banned substance (even an over-the-counter drug) results in an immediate suspension.

It's believed that Rogers tested positiveat some point early in training camp (all NFL players are tested within the first couple of weeks of camp). If that's the case, it's possible the banned substance was an ingredient in a weight-loss product. Rogers, who has been fined for being overweight in the past, might've been trying to get his weight down before reporting to camp.

Rogers has been limited in practice in recent weeks with a sore knee so the suspension will mean he should return at 100 percent in five weeks. However, the Lions defense will have to hang tough until that time because they've already lost tackle Shaun Cody (toe) for a couple of weeks.

Just pathetic.

I don't think it was steroids. It states it wasn't an "Illegal substance". Steroids are illegal in the U.S. arn't they? (Not being sarcastic)!

It wasn't steroids, it was an over-the-counter substance.

here's another link.

If I'm not mistaken steroids can be prescribed by doctors, so technically they are legal with prescription.

On there (ESPN) it said, "Steroids, and related substances."

In the middle of the same ESPN article it states.

Quote:
The substance that precipitated the positive test is not considered an anabolic steroid. But the violation still fall under the pruview of the NFL's steroid and related substance policy.

Quote:
Rogers' agent, Kennard McGuire, confirmed to the Detroit free Press that his client took an over-the counter supplement meant to help control his weight.

It's the steroid and related substance policy. It wasn't steroids, it was weight supplements, but those happen to fall under definitions and punishments set forth in the same rule that sets the definitions and punishments for steroids. Thus, the confusion.

They were talking on the radio about how he should have called the training staff to ask them if it had anything in it that would put him in violation of the rules. They said that there was another player on the team (they didnt name him) that had a bad cold and he called the staff from the store to make sure he wasn't doing anything wrong. They also have a meeting with all the players about what to do and what not to do before training camp when it comes to what not to take and how to go about it.

This is really going to hurt us... What i'm angry about is what if we were 5-1 or 4-2, and we are looking like a contender, and then this happens. I think people would be way more agree with Rogers. The reason I say this is becasue Rogers new he would get caught, and I guess the NFL lets the player know they will be getting suspended weeks before they announce it to the team and rest of the league. So really Rogers new this was coming, and he knew what he took was wrong. Mad
