Smith > Rodgers anywho...if we make the mistake of taking a Q, here's hoping it's Smith.

cardinals arent going to trade up to the no 1 spot. especially with the addition of kurt warner in arizona. plus i think that rodgers is a much better qb than smith. if we hav to take a 1st round qb i hope its rodgers and not smith. but i hope we dont go qb.

Section A

All of these current QBs have had varying degrees of success, some in limited playing time:

Chad Pennington = 1st round, pick 18
Daunte Culpepper = 1st round pick 11
Byron Leftwich = 1st round, pick 7
Ben Roethlisberger = 1st round, pick 11
Tom Brady = 6th round, pick 33
Brett Favre = 2nd round, pick 6
Drew Brees = 2nd round, pick 1
Aaron Brooks = 4th round, 36th pick
Marc Bulger = 6th round, 2nd pick
Billy Volek = undrafted
Jake Delhomme = undrafted
Trent Green = 8th round, 26th pick
Matt Hasselbeck = 6th round, 34th pick
Jake Plummer = 2nd round, 12th pick
Kurt Warner = undrafted
Rich Gannon = 4th round, 14th pick
************************************************************
Section B

As have these current QBs taken in the top 3:

Peyton Manning = 1st round, 1st pick
Michael Vick = 1st round, 1st pick
Drew Bledsoe = 1st round, 1st pick
Donovan McNabb = 1st round, 2nd pick
Steve McNair = 1st round, 3rd pick
************************************************************
Section C

Not so much these current QBs taken very high:

Tim Couch = 1st round, 1st pick
Akili Smith = 1st round, 3rd pick
Jeff George = 1st round, 1st pick
Ryan Leaf = 1st round, 2nd pick
Joey Harrington = 1st round, 3rd pick
************************************************************
Section D

The jury is still out on these highly drafted current QBs:

David Carr = 1st round, 1st pick
Carson Palmer = 1st round, 1st pick
Eli Manning = 1st round, 1st pick
Philip Rivers = 1st round, 4th pick
************************************************************

There have been as many busts or "semi-busts" (see Harrington) drafted that high in the last 10-15 years as there have been great QBs or good QBs (see Bledsoe). And the number of QBs listed in Section A is more than 3x the number of QBs listed in Section B. Obviously, there have been plenty of QBs that didn't pan out in the middle rounds as well (most of whom are not playing in the NFL anymore, therefore don't make the list of current Qs). What is the difference? About $40-$45 million.

Aaron Rodgers & Alex Smith are not the caliber of prospect that the QBs in Section B were; I think we can all agree on that, or at least most of us can agree on that. I frankly wouldn't even put them in the same class as the QBs in Section D, but that is a much more debatable point.

At any rate, the following QBs:
Charlie Frye
Adrian McPherson
Gino Guidugli
Kyle Orton
Andrew Walter
Jason Campbell
Dan Orlovsky
David Greene
Stefan LeFors
Derek Anderson
Ryan Fitzpatrick
Craig Ochs
Bryan Randall
Jason White

are all available in this draft, ranging in projections from late round 1 to undrafted free agent. If a change at QB (whether it's starter, backup, or 3rd string) is a foregone conclusion, it's infinitely more sensible to take a QB in the middle rounds, unless you can get a 1st round Q at a value pick (for example, if we were able to trade down and get Rodgers or Smith in the 7-12 range, that would be OK theoretically, because they would have good value there). But with the number of capable QBs available in the middle rounds this year, that's a much better selection, because the investment isn't as large. I personally feel fine with Rattay, Dorsey, and Pickett at QB next season in the WCO, because that offense fits their strengths (Rattay in particular). However, I know many people feel a change at QB is vital; if we go that route, I hope we make the wisest move and find a good value pick in the middle rounds.
