The better question is why not? |
4 years. 40-23-1 record. 3 playoff appearances. 3 division titles. 3 playoff wins. 1 super bowl appearance. | Very little of which has to do with him.
One of his greatest moves in office was signing Ted Ginn.
Think about that. |
Ted Ginn has been a solid wideout for the Panthers in his three years with them.
I would argue some of his actual greatest moves include keeping Cam, Luke, and Short on the roster into the next decade. Along with drafting Short in the first place... and drafting other great players like Star Lotulelei and Trai Turner. Snatching up unknowns who turned out to be good like Andrew Norwell and Mario Addison doesn't hurt either. Or trading for the one of the best punters in the NFL after dealing with one of the worst. He's managed to juggle the secondary well with vets/journeymen such as Mike Mitchell, Quintin Mikell, Kurt Coleman, Charles Tillman, Drayton Florence, and Cortland Finnegan all making solid appearances back there in the past four years.
The guy is straight up a fantastic GM. This fire is horrible. Someone will hire him and love him. _________________

Quote: | Marty Hurney - G - Panthers
Panthers hired Marty Hurney as interim general manager.
As expected. Hurney, who was the overseer of the Panthers from 2002-2012, ran the organization into the ground before being fired in 2012 and succeeded by Dave Gettleman. Now the reverse happens five years later, and Hurney will guide the team through the 2017 season before a permanent GM is hired next offseason. Veterans like Greg Olsen and Thomas Davis are licking their chops as they're sure to get the extensions they've been seeking. Hurney made a habit of handing out bad contracts when he was last at the helm. Luckily for Carolina fans, Hurney isn't expected to be the GM for next year's draft. |

I don't hold last season against Ron. Gettleman didn't put enough talent on the roster. Coach was set up for that 6-10. |
This would then beg the question though as to why DG wouldn't be fired at the end of the season before the FA openings and draft. One woulda thought he'd get a bit more leeway after snagging players like McAffrey and Samuel and clearly going on a mission to try and make amends for last year's depletion. Mr. Richardson certainly has some agenda going on here. |

We lost 5 games last year by 3 points or less. Some of those games, like the first Bucs game where we called a pass play on first down at the Bucs 1 yard line with Anderson at QB (the previous 3 runs had went for 12+ yards and Artis-Payne already had 2 TDs), were a direct result of bad coaching. The talent wasn't perfect, but I don't see why Rivera wouldn't deserve any of the blame.
If the team has a losing season again, then at the very least, Shula has to go barring a drastically different offensive approach. If Rivera hangs onto him for another season, then he deserves the seat to be as hot as possible. _________________
