The purpose of large signing bonuses and guaranteed money is security for the player not being cut after a bad year or 2 (Too much dead money)

The purpose of adding "garbage years" is to spread out the cap hit so the team can manage the salary cap

the purpose of the last few years of the contract being inflated salary, is so that the player gets a chance to renegotiate or be a Free Agent because the cap hit is too high to stay on the roster

In 5 and 6 year deals, both parties know it's only REALLY a 3 year deal, and they work the #'s so that both sides have a reason to get out and renegotiate the next contract (with lower cap hit for the team and more guarantees for the player)
