The #Raiders are signing G Gabe Jackson to a 5-year extension worth a whopping $56 million, source said. Locking up their future.

he was set to earn about 2 million this year, and so like Carr's deal, the numbers on 2017 were likely adjusted as a part of it too, effectively making it 6 years 58 million

Solid move. Jackson and Osemele are a nasty combo. When you get two guards playing at a really high level, your offense is so much better/ more efficient.

That is a lot of coin for a guard, but he's a damn good one. It's worth it to have an elite, guard, center, guard combination for the next 4-5 years. Unless Osemele kicks out to LT when Penn retires, but either way it's locking up 3 of the 5 spots and we've drafted a few tackle prospects. It will make the likely high draft pick to replace Penn (assuming one of the later round guys surprises) job a heck of a lot easier. And it's ALWAYS important to protect your franchise QB especially from interior pressure. I'm glad he's extended and here for the long haul, he's young, productive, and showed an ability to play at a high level at either guard spot. That 2014 draft has a chance to be all time special with Mack, Carr, and Jackson.

$23M per on starting guards Shocked

I remember when that was a nice, secret value position that the smart GMs targeted.

It's contracts like this that throw everything out of whack.... Don't get me wrong, he's solid, but Jesus...
I think most NFL fans would agree Gabe Jackson is not an elite player by any stretch of the imagination, but will now be compensated as such.
Meanwhile, players of the same caliber get cut left and right to save a million here, and a million there, yet somehow this slightly above average guard gets a $56 million contract; I guess I'll never understand it.

Yea, this has me worried about the future Scherff contract. Especially after Z. Martin signs his deal. Confused

with all this money being thrown around, they either are going to have to let mack walk or accept cap hell in just a few short years.

my guess is the latter. while everyone will hail the GM as a 'cap genius' in 3 years they'll call for his head.

Jackson is the type of player good GMs with large QB contracts let walk especially when they are already paying the other OG top dollar.

Definitely. For the year at least. I still wouldn't be shocked if the long term plan is for Osemele to play LT. Donald Penn not making a ton allows for it a little more, or even more of one of the young draft picks pans out at OT.

But yeah that is a ton of money invested in the interior.

Yeah this, those were the days.

But with the value of QB's today and how hard it is to find a good one, if you got a good QB and you go cheap there, you could be risking everything, specially if a injury occurs that hes no longer the same, with how hard it is to find a QB you could be out of lucks for years.

Where as maybe if you go cheap somewhere else then guard, but you keep your QB healthy, you can be competitive even if you have a huge chip in your armor somewhere else. You can't be competitive at all with out a QB.

So i would say the guard position worth every dime today.
