Quote:
Los Angeles Chargers first-round pick Mike Williams has a mild herniated disk in his lower back and will miss the remainder of the team's offseason program, including the mandatory minicamp.

He will continue to be treated without surgery and is a potential candidate to be placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list for the start of training camp at the end of July.

The team announced Williams' status on Tuesday. A source told ESPN's Adam Schefter that the team does not believe the injury to be serious.

Doesn't sound too serious thankfully. I loved him as a prospect and think he will do big things in LA. Smart move by the Chargers holding him out and I hope he doesn't need surgery.

Missing time this early in the process could stunt his development to a certain extent for his rookie season.

This could be no big deal...but it could be a very big deal going forward. The reason is because there is no cure for herniated discs. You can remove the disc, you fuse the spinal level, and you can potentially replace the disc with a prosthesis. All of the above have risks, and efficacy is pretty lousy. More often than not, herniated discs are managed conservatively with pain relief either through medicine, therapy modalities, and/or injections. When one disc goes out...the surrounding discs pick up the slack by absorbing more force, and they are predisposed to herniating. This could potentially be a bad thing for him moving forward.

It might be time to start thinking about a new facility, training staff or both... oh wait, that time started long ago, what gives?

They're lucky it wasn't a torn ACL. It would be a crying shame to lose such a promising rookie for the season before it even began. Hell, missing training camp is bad enough.

When will teams learn to stop drafting WRs named Mike Williams?

Sucks for Mike that he is getting behind. He now will likely be the third receiver if both Keenan and Tyrell remain healthy.

Glad the Titans picked the right receiver. Shame for Williams, he's got talent, just doesn't seem like his body is built to handle the rigors of the sport.

Oh no....Back issues...One wrong jump catch and landing on his back and he's out for the game. Now he's gonna miss the entire offseason and potentially parts of training camp...damn it.

I'm no doctor.. but as others have said above, a herniated disc hardly seems like it should be considered "minor".

To bad to see this. Hopefully he will be fine in the long-term and this doesn't impact what should be a great career for him.

Outside of neck, Back injury has to go be the worst. Herniated discs look so brutal.

If you ever just strained your back its so brutal. I have strained my back muscles before (like a few weeks ago actually) and ill be in bed for days and even sleeping is terrible-hard to do, everything becomes hard, like driving, walking, taking care of things around the house .. Thats like the lowest scale back injury you could get...

a Herniated disc must be so painful and hard to move around, like you wouldnt be able to do anything...

Its minor doe... Laughing
