You can tell people who don't like the move are only judging based on the surface. Ask these same people if they think OSU would make the tourney next year with a worse team than last year. The answer is no. So you're talking 3 years in a row missing the tournament with ZERO big name recruits coming in. Trevor Thompson, Jaquan Lyle, and Marc Loving are all gone.

The program is such a mess you could be talking 2-3 MORE years of missing the tournament.
Yeah but Matta was a great coach for you guys and had health problems. There are better ways to make this change. Give him a job as a "special consultant" or something like that instead of firing him - don't leak that he's staying for his last year, then announce you're canning him a month after the window for hiring a new college coach has closed.

If OSU could get Buzz Williams that'd be a nice hire, by the way.

I don't like how we did it either. We should have never leaked he was going to stay. Gene should have said something vague like "we will carefully analyze the program as a whole and discuss the situation with Thad."

I wanted to give him 1 more year and have him "retire." The problem is that I don't think he wanted to and we have to worry about the 2018 recruiting class. July is a very important month for that.

Did it have to be done? Yes.
Did we do it the right way? Hell no.
Yeah fair enough. The results weren't there and physically it didn't look like he could really handle the job any more.

But the AD needed to get out in front of this and didn't. There should have been conversations and clear expectations that things needed to change so that Matta could either resign or move to a consulting type role.

I dont know I think something changed between the end of the season and yesterday. Maybe if Matta got a commitment from a top tier recruit or something I dont think this was some random act.

Can't wait for CBB season to start. Should be Zona's best team since Miller has been the coach depending on how good the wings (Rawle, Randolph, Akot specifically) are at defense.

Frank Martin would be a guy I'd like. He gets a lot out of very little.

Compared to other names, I'd be happy with this Laughing

Gene Smith will get to crash this boat into the rocks because of Meyer falling into his lap. He can ride off into the sunset cashing checks for no reason as long as Urban keeps coaching.

Pretty much. And even though OSU is a football school and always will be, they can have a consistently strong basketball program too. Matta was a big part in bringing that back. To fire him for McDermott would make absolutely zero sense when they can afford to fire money at better coaches. To fire a guy with the accomplishments of Matta to hire a guy who has never been to the Sweet 16 and has only been good at Creighton because of his son is... yeah...

Maybe it works out, but at first glance... why?

No. Frank Martin belongs to us.

Why not look at Chris Mack or Gregg Marshall?

It'd never happen, but if Donovan came to OSU, Florida fans might try to burn Columbus to the ground. Laughing

Nah. We're happy with Mike White. He's a young dude, too.

That deal's far from done (Creighton fan here)

Gene left Omaha with McDermott and offered him the job. McDermott has kids in the Catholic high schools here in Omaha, has all the job security in the world, and has a pretty solid pay check as well. Adored in Omaha, he's gonna think long and hard before making this move. I honestly don't think he'll take it, but you guys would be lucky to have him. Great coach, and his recruiting keeps getting better

When Mo Watson went down we were a top 10 team this last year.

Also the coach before him at Creighton never made the sweet 16 either. Look at what he did last year (Dana Altman)

I badly want Gregg Marshall. I'm honestly tempted to just have Jent be a interim HC and just say screw it to the 2018 class. I want the right guy in place.
