I think most fans would be in favor of an increase

Roster limits were 40 up until the 70's and there wasn't a game day active. everybody could play. They've inched up over time, but its time for another increase.
48/54 might be palatable + 10 man PS

As noted, the game has specialized to an amazing extent and combined with the player safety concerns - there are very compelling reasons to increase both the game day and season rosters. Nothing happens until the new CBA and its hard to figure out who would be in favor of it.

The owners don't want to pay more in medical benefits or take on more CTE risk by having larger rosters
The players have to divide their pie among their membership, more members= less pie.
The fans would be in favor of it, so we just have to convince the networks to lean on the league and give us a better game, they get better ratings
But the Networks don't want all these back-ups playing because their model is built on pimping the stars...Tough sell all around even though it makes a lot of sense
