https://www.all22.com/pittsburgh-steelers/t-j-watt-almost-got-stolen-steelers-49ers-2017-nfl-draft

The Pittsburgh Steelers were ecstatic to land Wisconsin outside linebacker T.J. Watt with the No. 30 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. However, it appears as if the San Francisco 49ers had pre-draft discussions about trading up from the second round to draft Watt before the Steelers went on the clock.

Peter King of Monday Morning Quarterback was embedded in the 49ers war room during the draft and he published his behind the scenes account on Thursday. In it, 49ers general manager John Lynchís draft day discussions make it clear he is a huge fan of Watt.

Had it not been for Reuben Fosterís slide, who the 49ers were interested in with the No. 3 pick had the Chicago Bears taken Solomon Thomas, itís possible the 49ers would have swooped in and grabbed Watt. Instead, they traded up from their No. 34 overall pick in the second round to the No. 31 overall pick in the first round and grabbed Foster one pick after Watt went off the board.

Both teams are happy with how things worked out, but it would have been interesting to see what the Steelers would have done if Watt wasnít available to them with the No. 30 overall pick.

Sure makes me glad that Foster slid so the 9ers didn't feel the need to go up and get our guy. I do wonder who the Steelers would've taken had Watt not been available. Awuzie? Melifonwu? Reached for a different OLB like Willis, Bowser, Williams, etc? Kevin King? Adam Shaheen? lol

They should have traded and taken him.

That makes me feel better about the pick. Who do you all think we would have drafted, if Watt was gone?

The inner workings of the draft are quite interesting. I have a THEORY and more to add to the story. I think the Steelers were actually targeting Tak Mc Kinnley at 30 ahead of Watt. No facts to back this, just my THEORY of who they were targeting. Both Atlanta and Cleveland jumped ahead of the Steelers. The Browns too Njoku at 29 and the Falcons nabbed Tak who is a pass rushing specialist who can play both OLB or DE in passing downs.

Like last year when the Steelers were targeting William Jackson and the Bengals took him a pick ahead of the Steelers, I think the Steelers just followed their boards again. Picking late you will have some surprise picks that drop players and others were teams jump to get who they really want.

I don't think the Watt pick is a sexy pick, but it is a solid pick. I don't think that I would have jumped to get anyone in a draft this deep with our team needs. I think when all is said and done, the Steelers got a high energy, high character and dependable guy who will bring it every play. He also has some leadership traits which may make him a potential team captain as well.

Foster has some health concerns and is a gamble. If he is healthy, the 49'ers got a heck of a player. I don't think the Steelers could afford to take that gamble. I have to believe that if Watt was gone then Kevin King, Budda Baker or Obi Melifonwu would have been targets on the draft board based on need and grade.

Based on Tomlin visits/dinner on pro days it would have been Njoku or Watt. If both were gone it is an interesting thought as to where they might have gone. I understand that someone( I think Saints) was trying to trade into their spot and they turned them down.

I want to know why teams keep trading up in front of the steelers to take someone the steelers were potentially going to draft. Seems like it happens a lot since the revis draft. Is there a leak in the steelers draft room?

I'm beginning to think the Tomlin dinner thing is starting to become too much of a telegraph of who we like and it's why its happening much more.

Hahahahaha.

Jones' only chance is to go to Tenn. Otherwise he is flipping burgers this fall.

I think there is some truth to it, but also some of it is smokescreen as well. They certainly don't draft everyone that he has dinner with. I think they also talk to some players about other players that they are interested in as well.
