After building some momentum offensively this offseason with the signing of veterans like Adrian Peterson and Ted Ginn, Jr., the New Orleans Saints just took a major step backward.

According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, starting center Max Unger suffered a foot injury and will miss about five months. The anchor of their offensive line, who came to Louisiana in a trade for tight end Jimmy Graham in 2015 and started 31 of 32 possible games, will start the season on the physically unable to perform list, Rapoport reported on Good Morning Football on Monday.

The only silver lining for the Saints at this point is that they have time. The Unger issue came to light before the rigors of training camp and allows for some long-term planning at the position.

how big of an impact will this have on the Saints offense?

Has he actually been very good for them? Honest inquiry

He should be back by October so around Week 5 or 6. It hurts them a little in the short term but probably won't make or break their season all that much.

one of the best lineman in the league. Last year he nearly broke the record for fewest pressures in a season. I could look up the thread but im on my phone a work. don't think he gave up a sack or pressure until sometime in the middle of the season.

With center Max Unger out at least through the start of the regular season, the Saints have time to adjust on the fly. So here’s an idea floated by Eliot Shorr-Parks of NJ.com: Trade running back Mark Ingram to the Eagles for center Jason Kelce.

Unger is a huge loss. Not just a good blocker, he's brilliant with his line calls. He's the next Nick MAngold, he's been that good. Tough loss for the Saints.

Unger is a stud.

Trading Ingram for a 5 week starter at centre would be incredibly short sighted and not at all smart

Agreed, they'd be better off kicking the tires on Nick Mangold.

Wish the Eagles would package Kelce and a draft pick to the Saints for Ingram.

Wont happen, would be awesome tho.

Wasn't Kelce pretty bad last year?

Yeah for the most part, struggled in pass protection, shined in some moments blocking down field-picking on linebackers, pretty average over all run blocking tho, over all it wasn't good.

Injuries and the change of systems (3 systems now for him Andy's, Chip's and now Doug's) and all the different QB's hasn't helped him. Seemed when he was with Andy he was super sharp and always on the ball, then Chip sucked the life out of every one and still feels like those Andy guys are still getting over the Andy to Chip thing. New scenery might do wonders for him.

That's why i would think you would need to package Kelce with a decent pick for Ingram to make it worth it for the Saints to roll the dice.

Sean Payton appears to hate Ingram and Kelce could probably move over to OG after Unger returns (just spit balling ideas).

That won't happen, pretty sure we are pairing Peat and Warford at guard now we have Ramczyk at RT once Strief retires
