I guess once you've gotten used to a Shankpotamus you start to forget what an actual punt looks like, huh? Wink

I feel better about Vogel now that the gif shows he has the ability to boom one long. I don't believe I've seen Schum put one more than 45 yards in the air when given the field to do so.

from mcginn@JSO

Vogel: ďAs a punter you always know in the back of your head that thereís a strong likelihood that you donít get drafted. Look at the guys in the league. Iím sure a good percentage of them were undrafted as well. Obviously, everyone wants to get drafted. Itís not the end of your career because you donít. Ö Everything starts with my hang time. I think I have good control over the ball directional kicking-wise. Ö We were 95% pro style. We did an occasional rugby (punt) against teams that brought a lot of pressure. Ö (Florida) just wasnít the right situation. I just didnít think I was getting a fair opportunity.Ē

AFC special-teams coach: ďI really liked him before the combine but he had a disappointing combine. The combineís important to me. Youíre out there and you need to do it. Thatís how it is in a game.Ē

NFC scout: ďHe was our highest-rated guy. Heís athletic. Heís a little erratic but heís got a big leg and heís pretty accurate in terms of directional."

As for the holding aspect, I never understood why teams don't use their backup QB as their holder. It creates more possibilities as to what you can do in terms of fakes and stuff of that nature. Whereas, with a punter you're pretty limited, unless your name is Marquette King. If you all of a sudden bring in a backup QB on a FG it tips it off as being a fake, obviously.

Probably just don't want to waste the limited practices they get now having the backup QB, who's job is to get you out of a game, holding kicks

I'm wondering why we're discussing this when we haven't even gone to TC.

Eh, I'm not too optimistic about our punting no matter who is doing it. I'll admit I think we've had subpar punters playing for us for a while now, but Lambeau is one of (if not the) hardest stadiums to kick field goals in and I belive that carries over to punting as well. When you look at the averages over the last several years, opponents have not fared much better than we have in Lambeau (~1.5 yards per punt under the league average, we are about a half-yard below that). Schum punted over a yard and a half better in away games than in home games last year too. I think we'll have to live with the fact that we play half our games in a stadium that is significantly harder to kick in than most, and temper expectations accordingly. A little above average is about as much as we can probably hope for over the course of the season, even woth a good punter.

Even just average is still significantly better than what we've had though.

Or we could just toss a 5th round pick to the Raiders for King.

Or risk his hands getting kicked

This Vogel kid looks promising. He's gotta be better than Schum...

Because our punting has been erratic, with little possibility of digging us out of a hole. I guess we shouldn't discuss team needs before training camp? Should we just shut down the forum until training camp? Rolling Eyes

Overreact much? The thread topic suggests that we've already moved on from Vogel. I think Vogel will beat out Schum.
