I am using OTC/Spotrac for these numbers, and they are ball park, but it should give you a pretty good idea of how great a position we are in.

Currently we are sitting at pretty much break even with just over ~$5m in space and a rookie pool of roughly $6m needing to be spent. What that does *not* account for is the savings from Romo. As of June 2nd, the Cowboys should have roughly ~$14M in cap space available for the 2017 year. That is with 92 players under contract (including rookies). Thats good. But it gets better!

Every key starter or back up is locked up for 2018 as well, with the following exceptions:

Irving - RFA
Gaethers - RFA
McFadden - URFA
Collins - RFA
Hitchens - URFA
Jones - URFA
Paea - URFA
Lawrence* - URFA

The important thing to note here, is that the majority of these players are either already on cheap second contracts or they are restricted. Any one of these guys can be resigned for a very minimal cap hit (~$1-3M). Lawrence is the only one that could be expensive.

In 2018 we are currently $19M under the cap. We could carry over up to the maximum of $14M from 2017, bringing the 2018 cap space available to $33M. Realistically we will resigned/extend some of the above players (+Martin) and FA due to injuries. We also have to account for ~$6m in the rookie draft pool. I think a very fair assumption would be ~$20-25M in available cap in 2018.

This year I hope we win the superbowl, of course. But the window is wide open. Guys, next year we will have $20+M in cap space, almost the entire roster locked up + another draft class. We really need to make some noise in the playoffs over the next 3 years.

I can totally see Lawrence magically being healthy, active, and having a career year in 2017, we re-sign him to a big contract, and he is constantly hurt/suspended thereafter.

Agree that with a young roster most of whom will be locked up, and an enviable cap situation in 2018, now is the time to make some playoff noise.

Why do you have Jones as a URFA in 2018?

I believe he meant Chris, not Byron.

Top unfair cap fact of the day:

Anthony Brown does not currently count against the Cowboys salary cap because he is not a top-51 salary.

Brown should get a big bonus check for playing time this season. I really hope he is as good as he appeared last season...he is found gold!

I'm just glad that we'll finally be rid of Romo's albatross contract; whether it's this year or between this year and next. I hated that deal.

Drafting well eases a lot of cap issues. Would be a massive letdown if this team doesn't produce at the very least a deep playoff run the next 5 yrs. Assuming of course this year's draft class is as good as I think it is and the other young guys progress in the right direction.

That is the key my friend. Draft well and your hand won't be forced to splurge in free agency seeking that quick fix which often ends up putting you in a less than friendly cap situation. At some point you have to pay that free agency bill.

The key for me is locking up McClay. I don't know what his contract status is, but I'd make sure he is running our drafts for a long time.

A little off topic but maybe someone on here knows. . . Under a rookie contract is there a threshold of games not played (i.e. Tapper) that kinda act as a "redshirt" year? Basically, I want to know if a player like Tapper can have an extra year under contract because he didn't play a whole year. Same goes with Jayl9n smith

Yeah I think they'll both be RFAs after 4 years instead of UFAs since they missed a whole year. Same goes for Randy Gregory, technically, fwiw
