It is redundant to have Sproles and Pumphrey but he'll take over that role fully in 2018. We've all watched what an impact someone like Sproles can have. It is pretty important to have the role filled. I rather have them do it a year early than be searching after Sproles is gone.

I'd be interesting to see what the Chargers' fans initial reaction was to Sproles getting drafted, I bet it was similar to reactions I am see about Pumphrey's size.

Same, seems like a guy who can get yardage in chunks, thats all i really want. A physical downhill runner doesnt pair well with our more finesse current line anyways. Fine with Sproles and Pumphrey being similar, who cares.

1. DE Derek Barnett, Tennessee

Lead up: Keep picking QBs, watch those CBs and RBs fall!! There goes Corey Davis, damn I really wanted him. There's actually a lot of talent falling....we're getting something good. Ok almost here...I want Allen, Howard, or Hooker.

Pick was made: "Meh, at least they didn't screw up". At minimum Barnett will be a solid DE across from Graham and we really needed another DE.

After I slept on it: I love the pick. Once I got past who was there and looked at the pick itself and how he fit on the Eagles team I got excited. While I still have a skeptical bug in my head about his athletic upside but I know that at his floor he'll provide a very good edge presence on the opposite side of Brandon Graham. I'm not sure if they'll give Vinny Curry the shot first because of his contract, Barnett will start because of his draft status, or if they'll have a solid DE rotation. Either way I am most happy that we added a top tier player with a relatively high floor at a position of need.

2. CB Sidney Jones, Washington

Lead up: C'mon Cook, keep falling. Only have to worry about GB and NYJ. Cincy? Nah they like criminals they'll take Mixon. F bomb, F bomb, the effin vikings traded ahead of us and took Cook.

Real Time: Dammit. Ef the Vikings. Great pick by the Eagles but dammit I wanted Cook. Effing Purple [reacted]

After I slept on it: Again, I loved the pick. Jones was a legitimate choice for #14 pre-injury. While there is always a concern with a big injury like this I feel like we essentially got two first rounders in this draft. We'll probably PUP him and miss him for the first half of the season but its going to be nice having a player that can be a legit #1 corner on a team currently slated to start Jaylen Mills and Ron Brooks on the outside.

3. CB Rasul Douglas, West Virginia

Lead up: OK....time to get that tailback we need to keep pressure off Wentz. Hunt is still there, Foreman is still there, hell I'll even take James Connor or Samaje Perine. Smit, There goes Hunt. Smit, there goes Foreman. Tankersly wouldn't have been a bad pick....

Real Time: After the pick was made I looked at who was available and literally texted a buddy "not who I thought but solid pick". I would have rather taken someone like Connor who went right after us but I understood the need for another CB.

After I slept on it: I still would have rather had a bigger back like Perine or Connor who both went a few picks after ours. The player I really wanted the eagles to get at CB was still on the board (Howard Wilson) and he offered a skillset similar to Douglas but seemed to me like he was taylor-made for the Schwartz system.

4. WR Mack Hollins, North Carolina

Lead up: Going into Saturday I was still hoping the Eagles addressed RB with either Perine or Jamal Williams and WR with a Switzer/Cannon/Westbrook with an outside shot that they triple dipped and added Howard Wilson but I doubted it.

When Perine went to Washington I was super annoyed but smit happens. As long as they addressed the need for another playmaker I think I would have survived.

Real time: When Hollins was the pick my immediate though was "hopefully he makes it on the field" and "at least he'll be good for special teams"

After I slept on it: Its another calculated risk pick by the Eagles. Hollins has the HWS to be a #1 option on the outside. hopefully he can stay healthy and develop. For now the worst thing he does is replace DGB as the defacto "big" WR and he provides a great special teams guy which is something the back end of our WR depth chart has been lacking.

4. RB Donnel Pumphrey, San Diego State

Lead-Up: Dammit.....the Browns just took Howard Wilson. We're still like 15 picks away and already got two corners. Trade up!! Here we go!! There goes Davenport, hopefully we weren't looking for a developmental OL. Lets get Jamal Williams and i'm good for the rest of the draft.

Pick was made: "Ok we got Sproles 2.0 for when Sproles retires after the season"

After I slept on it: I still have no idea what the Eagles are doing at RB. Are we keeping Mathews!? Are we signing Blount with our non-existent cap space? The Sproles replacement is nice but as far as backfield fit he's just another scat back on a team of scat backs. I really would have rather had Jamal Williams to add a RB with size. He's to hoping Williams busts and Pumphrey he actually becomes Sproles.

I stopped watching the draft live and started following on my phone from a friends house at this point. Drinking has started.

5. WR Shelton Gibson, West Virginia

Lead up: Lets see who's left: Brantley? Second round football player, first round woman beater? Corn Elder would be a good Nickel guy. Maybe King at Safety. Well, there goes King....and Elder. Do they go Brian Hill? trade back it is. I like it.

Second lead up: Well....there's still Brantley. KD Cannon would be nice to give us speed on the outside to replace Smith. Hell I wouldn't hate Buckey Hodges either. Oh, ok a quick trade back two spots and out 7th jumps into the 6th? Ok Eagles, I like it.

Real Time: Well he's not KD Cannon but he does the same things.

After sleeping on it: I'll trust the Eagles scouts over what I know. The only value I saw at that point in the draft was speed at WR, Corner was decimated, weren't many good OL. I'm happy with it.

5. S/LB Nathan Gerry, Nebraska

Lead up: Alcohol.

Real Time: He plays football right? Whatever its the 6th round I don't know a ton of the players left here anyway. Hopefully I don’t read anyone compare him to Dawkins on Monday.

After sleeping and reading a little on it: Since they've announced his move to LB this really eliminates the big knocks on him. He's going to need to add a couple pounds to stick around and he's going to need to re-learn the LB position but with our [inappropriate/removed] poor depth at LB he has a solid chance.

6. DT Elijah Qualls, Washington

Lead up: Alcohol.

Real Time: "ESPN I'm over your damn draft alerts"

Friend texted me: "I like the guy the Eagles got, he's always getting mentioned at the Washington games. He's super strong"
My response: "He damn well better be strong, he's about to get beat up by multiple 300lb dudes."

After sleeping and reading a little on it: He’s a solid rotational DT, hopefully he learns how to do something besides be a wide body.

TL;DR: Overall I think we had a solid draft. I'm still super confused with the Pumphrey pick as we already have a ton of guys with the same skillset but overall the eagles added a top tier pass rusher, replenished the secondary, added some playmakers on offense. I give the draft a B+

I mentioned it after Jones was drafted that Barnett and him are really young.

Quote:
Reuben Frank‏@RoobCSN
Derek Barnett is 20 years, 10 months.
Sidney Jones is 20 years, 11 months

Dion Lewis was 20 years, 7 months.

Those are 3 youngest.

This really puts it in perspective though.

FTFY Draft 2017

1. Marlon Humphrey CB Alabama 6"0

2. Quincy Wilson CB Florida 6"1

3. Kendell Beckwith ILB LSU 6”3 247 – move Hicks to OLB

4a. Mack Hollins is fine – good size and play style

4b. Jamaal Williams RB BYU 6”0 212 – can be a 3 down back with speed, block and catch in the mold of Arizona's David Johnson. Given an A rating on other rankings and went to Green Bay two picks after that small bro RB Pumphrey. Pee Wee football with that Pumphrey guy.

Besides Jamaal Williams, I'd rather the Eagles real draft.....100%

I feel you have to take the entire team into account, rather than judging them by themselves.

Barnett - Not the most athletic, but he produced, great instincts, and he is good against the run as well as getting to the QB. Lining up next to Graham and Cox is great! If all three produces, you are talking about a pretty dominating line.

Sidney Jones/ Rasul - Rasul is boom or bust to me considering prospects say he cant do press coverage. He however is big, and seems to be very instinctive on jumping in front of passes for interceptions. Then you have Sidney, a highly talented corner with an injury. I think Sidney will be great, with the front 7 wreaking havoc, and Rasul as long as he can work on his press coverage could get plenty of turnovers if he can translate that to the NFL. Sidney is my favorite pick of the draft. I think he will bounce back 100%

Pumphrey - Replacement for Sproles. obviously, we missed on a powerback as a run for RB came earlier than Eagles anticipated. Maybe he will surprise everybody though. RB by committee is a NE approach minus the powerback (Blount).

Hollins - May be able to replace DGB if he impresses. He is 6'4, and runs a 2.52. great ST, and also a down the field threat. Howie believes he can contribute on offense. Having 6'3 Jeffery, 6'4 Hollins, 6'5 Ertz, and 6'3 JMatt in the redzone. Talk about having tall receivers. Having scatbacks like Pumphrey is also a threat in the passing game here.

Shelton Gibson - Good ball tracking skills. Plays that went for more than 20 yards he has caught all of them. 17 for 17. Or maybe I misread that. He ran a 4.5 I believe at the combine, which hurt his stock, or else he would have been a 3rd rounder from what Ive heard. he however ran a 4.39 at pro-combine. He may ultimately replace Torrey Smith if he impresses. Definitely a real threat to do that in 2018.

Idk anything about the others drafted.

Maybe I am wrong, but Bill Belichek doesnt seem to care if a player is athletic or not.

Bill Belichek is about building a team, not collecting talent.

Sticking to my C- grade

I (understand) but don't like rotational DL because its so easy to scheme vs that with a ton of no-huddle.

My fav picks are two guys who may sit this year (Jones/Qualls), well take that back most of the guys in this class with sit this year.

Douglas was a little to grabby in press from what I saw, I had him in the 4th

I knew we would select Pumphrey just don't see him being a guy we can count on. More gadget. A couple splash plays a year until injuries knock him out

Hollins is Hank Baskett

Gibson is Bryce Treggs

Gerry is a project
