This was an awful pick. Reached big time for a guy who probably won't make the team. Oh well, it happens.

Not a fan of the pick at all, definitely think we should've went DT Carlos Watkins. However I'm not gonna completely knock the pick. If you look back at the draft I'd say we made some pretty safe choices with our first 4 picks and decided to take a risk on a guy with all the physical measures, big, fast, strong. If he's coachable he certainly could become a solid backup to cravens, who lets remind ourselves is no guarantee at that position. With that being said I'm gonna hold out some hope for this guy to come through, Maybe even as just a special teams player.

Since I ragged on Anderson with regards to 3sigmaathlete.com, I guess I should give some kudos to Nicholson.

Whereas Anderson compared favorably to only 0.9% (-2.4 standard deviations from average) of the NFL athletes who are edge rushers (as defined by 3sigma), Nicholson compares favorably to 77.8% of safeties (0.8 standard deviation).

So, in the second we drafted a guy with great tape but awful athletic scores, and in the fourth we drafted a guy with great athletic scores but bad tape.

The bolded is a great point, I never thought of it that way. We really didn't take a risk until this pick, so taking an projection/upside selection with him and then with Davis, JHC and Hosely makes sense; especially for our defense where we have had a bunch of jag's since 09 - other than a few players - and it's showed, especially in the lack of athleticism and steam speed on defense. We needed to take some athletes on day 3 and hope our defensive coaches can develop them into more than just athletes within a their rookie contracts.

Nicholson, Davis, JHC and Hosely rest off the chart in athleticism; they just need to be codhes into better football players. Let's hope this iteration of defensive coaches can finally get that job done like the previous staff did with Jarrett, Dunbar and possibly Lanier from what we've all heard.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/football-insider/wp/2017/05/12/a-closer-look-at-redskins-fourth-round-pick-montae-nicholson/?utm_term=.9071eb5adca3&wpisrc=nl_skins&wpmm=1

Good breakdown from Mark Bullock at wapo on Nicholson. His physical skills and athleticism are evident - just like with Josh Harvey-Clemons - but like JHC, both players need work in coverage. Neither one locate the ball very well. They are athletic and can make up for their mistakes, but they need a lot of development in coverage. It's clear as rookies, and probably longer than that they are purely going to be special teams players. Which, is perfectly fine for a late 4th round pick and a 7th round pick. I understand why the skins drafted these guys; they need faster and more athletic guys on special teams and on defense period; even if those players aren't going to be able to contribute much on special teams, they needed better athletes and more speed on defense. They're both projects for sure, but the athleticism is already there, they just need development in coverage and play recognition, which hopefully comes over the next few years.

Quote:
Overall, Nicholson is a fantastic athlete with ideal size and movement skills for the safety position. However, in my opinion, he needs a lot of work on fundamental tackling, diagnosing plays particularly with play action and misdirection and reading the quarterback to locate the football. For a safety, he was out of position too often as a result of missed reads and play-action fakes, which cannot happen at the safety position at the next level.

By far the worst pick of the Redskins draft

Think poor mans Taylor Mays and that's this guy

They will keep him on roster or practice squad for 2 years but we had so many other better prospects we could have drafted

Nicholson sort of seems like the anti-Sua Cravens. Great athlete with zero football instincts.

We'll have to see how he develops, it's too early to say he's not going to be a good player. He certainly has the potential to be and the talent to be a starter, he just needs better coaching and more development, hopefully our defensive staff can get him there.

That's Josh Harvey Clemons, not Nicholson. JHC is going to be a special teams guy and a nickle/dime LB like Cravens was last year. I think JHC will probably be a practice squad player this year and we'll keep 4 ILB (Brown, Foster, Compton and Spaight)
