With the 112th Overall Pick in the 2017 NFL Draft...

The Chicago Bears Select...

S...Eddie Jackson...Alabama...

Scouting Report...

Quote:
Analysis

Strengths

Has solid athleticism for the safety spot. Not a speed merchant but has the instincts and range to play over the top. Gets secondary lined up. Can cover tight ends and the occasional slot receiver. Former cornerback who played wide receiver in high school. Has the tracking, timing and hands to take the ball away when he gets his shot. Offers roster versatility. Returned two punts for touchdowns this season and has three career defensive touchdowns. Background as a returner makes him more dangerous than your average safety after an interception.

Weaknesses

Long, but lanky and not built for a physical pounding. Grab and drag tackler. Will do what he has to against the run, but he's not going to be a tone-setter with his hitting. Dominant defensive front made his job in coverage much easier. Had some easy, no-brainer interceptions float his way on overthrows. Can get too cute trying to stay glued to the quarterback's eyes rather than triggering towards his boundary help over the top. Will occasionally lose track of his deep ball responsibility. Has had two major injuries in his career that will draw plenty of attention at the combine.

Fits the character mold Pace likes. Adds return value.

The big question with him was whether he had legit ballhawk skills or if he was just traded product of the talent in front of him.

For sure. Savage had him as a 3rd rounder even with the injuries

Similar to Hooker - all that talent around Jackson allowed him the opportunity to just play centerfield and read the QB's eyes. Saban is a smart guy and knew how to best utilize Jackson's athletic gifts.

That works both ways tho...it's easy to say these guys just sat back there in the centrefield but their presence and ability to attack the sideline makes QBs hold the ball longer and allows that talent upfront to get to the QB...I don't think Jackson was by produce of the talent around him...I think he was just as talented.

I'm a fan of this pick. We finally drafted a position of need with a true FS quality to him. His ability to return will also really help us.

I'm surprised he went this late due to being with such a big program.

Greg Gabriel‏: Another thing about Eddie Jackson. Very smart, as good as Bama secondary was, Jackson is the guy who got them lined up

Whenever people want to talk about Mike Brown, THAT'S a trait that nobody mentions. The Bears secondary has struggled to get lined up properly in key situations for a really long time now. Demps has some experience in that area s a vet, and now Jackson as a rookie.

As disappointed as I am that this wasn't Desmond King, this does seem like a really good pick. I'm happy with it.

Of all the non-first round safeties this one was the one I liked most as far as pure FS go. Has the leadership qualities and ball skills we have been coveting. He's a PR option too. Worst case IMO he's a standout ST captain in 3 years, but if healthy he's got 2017 starter potential. I think he's the most bust proof pick we've made and has excellent upside given his draft position. Big fan of this one.

The only pick I did like. Fits a need, and seems like he'd be a good player. Of all the guys we drafted, he has the best chance to start week 1.
