I'm hoping we keep all the key secondary guys. Starters = Sean Smith, Connely, Obi, Joseph. Emerson = slot corner. Nelson = dime package safety to allow obli to be a CB covering the 4th WR or TE. The modern game you need 5-6 solid DBs. We have that now.

Still can't name a starting front 7 though Smile

We'll have that next year, it always takes a year for secondary players to get used to the league. They'll be used sparingly this year I think.

And flagged for 15 yards and the ability to be sent to the locker room. Last year I thought some were worried Joseph wouldn't fit in 'today's NFL' because of the way he hit. Obi will bring down the ball carrier, not bounce off the other player as they score cause tackle wasn't made but he was 'hit hard', get injured, or cost us from getting the ball back on 3rd and long cause of the flag...

We need to re-sign Riley asap and hope MEJ and Jenkins stay healthy and also hope Vanderdoes plays better than expected.

Calhoun and Ward have to step up. IMO we are putting way too much faith in our staff to coach them up, but I guess this is what MD pays them for. I hope the staff and players can put it together. Would hate to be held back by our front 7.

If we can cover better, it should help our pass rush. However, I agree. as it stands now, we're only left with a lot of hope in our defensive front. It was of my opinion that if we could have gotten Mack and Irvin some help ,a very good 3rd and 4th player, we'd have something special on defense.

Might as well keep Heeney around for camp. What if he improves?

I agree lol.
Jelly Ellis couldn't even beat out Willams at NT and Williams was so bad.
Corey James was benched for PRJ who isn't even on the team
Latham as 3T no thank you. No pressure ever up the middle last year
Jenkins according to my dolphin friend fans was really bad.
MEJ just hope he's the same player from rookie year pre-injury

Definitely a possibility. The questions are where Ward and Vanderdoes end up.

This post is misleading in a lot of ways. Firstly, Dan Williams only played 47 more snaps than Ellis. Ellis and Williams often played at the same time as an attempt to improve the run defense. The problem with Williams is that although he provided a modicum more pass rush than Ellis, he was atrocious as a run defense - which is unacceptable as a 1-tech. Ellis, while not great, is a decent option as a 1-tech.

Secondly, Corey James was a 6th round edge convert who actually did a decent job all things considered. To add, Riley was one of the better MLBs in the league last season. Little fun fact, Corey James still played when Riley was on the roster. The Raiders employed a specific look where he and Mack would rush off he same side.

Jenkins is a relative unknown considering his recent injury. I anticipate he'll be a lateral move from Smith, which is still not good. The addition of Melifonwu hides the need of the WLB to cover, so I'm not too worry about average to below average play there.

Overall, I'm super excited about this draft and even more excited about this Raiders defense next year.

I think they'll move Vanderdoes around inside. He can play some NT. Will be interesting to see where they want his weight.

He's shown nothing. Looks lost out there. Need to cut ASAP

the more i look at melifanwu tape, the more clear it becomes that he's not a strong safety. he's much better in coverage... either when he mans up on an extra receiver, or when he plays center field and puts his great range to use.

its kinda funny that our 6'4 225 pound guy might be the center fielder while our 5'10 207 pound guy plays in the box... but its kind of a shame since Obi's physique gives you hopes he can be a Kam type, but that's just not how he plays. KNJ is going to have to be creative, make sure he covers TE's, etc
