And by the time they draft a QB in 2018 or 2019, and that guy solidifies (maybe) into a good player, they're going to have to re-sign all of these draft picks.

The idea of building a good core of talent for 2-4 years and then adding a QB is stupid in the NFL because of the short careers, short contracts and high variability to drafting. Not to mention, them ending up 7-9 next year with Kessler/Osweiler is probably one of the worst things that could happen to them since they'll miss out on a chance to take an elite QB prospect and it probably means Kessler/Osweiler were useful enough to make them hesitant in trading picks for a veteran or signing a FA for tens of millions of dollars.

It isn't like Browns aren't trying for a QB. Apparently they that Mahomes would fall to #12 and they tried to trade for Jimmy G. But I don't get why passing on 2nd round QB prospects for #1 or trading into the top 10 is wrong move when they could have a shot at better QBs next yr. I'd be surprised if they don't have a better QB prospect available or they don't just get Jimmy G. I'd rather stock piling picks and make a move for a good QB than pass on Garrett for a disappointment that will need replacing. Unless I'm missing something but i wouldnt want to bet on any of these guys at the price they're at.

Edit: If Jacoby looks good in TC what are the odds you think we would strike a deal w/ Clev?

Meh, this is not the year to need a quarterback and of course it's the first year the Browns own the first pick.

They definitely need an answer at quarterback, but there is a right and wrong way to finding one. Selling the farm for a mediocre prospect that's benefiting from a weak class (Trubisky) or the front office forcing one on the coaching staff (Johnny Jackass) are examples of the wrong way. Drafting one in later rounds every year if there are no options in the first and assessing them yearly is an example of the right way.

The #1 rule of the draft is, as long as it makes sense, draft who you think is the best player available. When you draft for need you're settling for mediocrity. The Browns will simply have to play the hand their dealt.

I know nothing about Garcia but I really like Rivers. Really athletic and smooth and a great first step.

Edit: So is his role going to be a nickel rusher and development OLB? In his view snaps in coverage I saw he looked pretty good at it.

Remember how Rob Ninkovich carved out his role in the defense?

Nice, will need to read about them. Rivers looks like he has a good motor.

Patriots acquire TE James O’Shaughnessy and the 216th pick from the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for the 183rd pick.

I'd still like to draft a TE. I still think Kittle is a steal in this draft. Though Hodges is an interesting weapon and Butt a RS stash. But I bet he regrets his bowl game now.

4/25: Deatrich Wise.

I like it. Extremely lenghty and a good athlete. I seem to remember there was a bigger buzz around him last year, but he played injured in 2016, so that might have affected his stock. Looks like a prototypical 5T, I'm very interested in where he can find a role in this defense. Adds to the versatility for sure.

He is another versatile DL with the ability to go in or out. His motor is good and he has power but quicker OL contain him and he can't really change direction without losing all his speed and power. Not the best in the run game either, probably a passing down specialist.

I thought he looked pretty good setting the edge and handling the double teams in the shrine game. I watched his college games a couple months ago but he looked much better in shrine game than for Ark

6/28: Connor McDermott, OT, UCLA

DE-OT-DE-OT, can't break the pattern Smile .

I know nothing about McDermott, feel free to tell me about him.

Last year he was a projected 1st rounder. Smooth kickstep. Nice athlete. Very similar to Nate Solder. Then in the first game this year he lost a few reps against Myles Garrett, and everyone overreacted and said McDermott sucked. The truth is, he was pretty competitive on most of the other snaps, and he was much better the rest of the season. Losing 2 or 3 times all game to the #1 overall pick shouldn't kill a guy's stock. He's closer to the Patriots OT prototype than Garcia is, although he's not as fluid or explosive. Good chance he displaces Waddle from the roster, and becomes our swing tackle next tackle.

As he does every year, Loyko with the instant updates to all the UDFA signings. Pats figure to sign a ton of guys with only 65ish players currently on the roster.
