|I decided to do a draft with trade back.
They lost Timmons, replaced one scrub RB with another, and added Justin Hunter, Tysal Alualu and David Johnson. Johnson is a known role player, and Hunter could be a reclamation project. Alualu is a depth guy. Justin Gilbert was cut and replaced by Coty Sensabaugh, who is basically a journeyman depth guy at this point, going on his 4th team in 3 seasons now.
You all know I don't like the WRs on this team besides Brown very much. I don't trust Byrant, and I think the rest are mediocre at best. I also don't think that Green is reliable at TE, but James is solid as a role player.
On D, there are 2 LB spots open and I'd also like to get Mitchell's replacement if possible. I'm not that down on CB as many are, but Gay's age is a problem.
So going into the draft, that is my mindset.
Draft, using CBS's current projections as a rough guide:
*Trade back from 30, picking up picks 2-13 and 3-13*
2-13. Adam Shaheen, TE, Ashaland - A huge target that could really turn into a matchup nightmare. I think he can be very, very good.
2-30. Jordan Willis, OLB, K State - A good athlete with ideal size and physique to groom behind James Harrison. (I know this is the popular pick, but it would be hard to pass on a WR like Kupp)
3-13. Ahkello Witherspoon, CB, Colorado - A 6'3" CB with good coverage skills but not much physicality.
3-30. Alex Anzalone, ILB, Florida - I think he'd be a great replacement for Timmons.
3-comp. Chad Hansen, WR, Cal - A guy that has good size and speed and athleticism, good ball skills and hands, and can go get the ball down the field. (I originally had Trey Hendrickson here and Cooper Kupp in 2-30, but changed the picks)
4. Shaquill Griffin, CB, UCF - He's a guy who caught my eye at the combine. Looks to be a good athlete with good feet. Develop him to replace Gay.
5. Brian Allen, CB/S, Utah - Another 6'3" CB with good athleticism and raw ability. A newly convert from WR, he's raw and will take some time.
**one of these CBs in 4-5 could be switched out for Samaje Perine or James Conner, but I'd have a hard time doing so**
6. KD Cannon, WR, Baylor - A burner to hedge the bet against Byrant staying healthy and Hunter materializing into the guy I thought he could be coming out of college.
7. Tedric Thompson, S, Colorado - Along with Witherspoon, his teammate, he led the nation in PDef, but Thompson's turned into INTs 5 times. Average size, lacks a little speed at 4.60, but he is smart and has good coverage ability and ball skills.
UDFA: Seth Russell, QB, Baylor
UDFA: Montae Nicholson, S, Michigan State
UDFA: Jimmie Gilbert, LB, Colorado
