This whole offseason they have been grabbing players that are capable of playing multiple positions..

Should be a "good chess piece" for us also

Nice signing. Perfect high impact rotational player for Zim. Awesome.

Good fit. He might need to get back to 280 pounds. Could potentially push Tom Johnson off the roster, I wouldn't mind seeing that given his potential versatility at LE too.

I don't think Jones is big enough to play that spot in base.

AG20 did a pretty detailed write up on why the Packers moved Datone away from being a full- time interior DL

http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=562521&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0

"This switching is why Datone Jones doesn't play very often. Jones can hack it at 3-tech, but if the offense switches sides he gets killed on that Center/Guard double team. Now there are things teams do to counter that, they might move a LB up into the B-gap, and now if you want to pass Jones is isolated on your center which is terrifying for a QB but you don't want a defensive lineman who can't hold up on a double team."

This is something I am really liking about all our pick ups. Versatility.

Maybe this is the first move where the Vikings will be a little less harsh with people with off the field issues? Really don't have many players with much off of the field stuff.

I'm happy with the signing, and with the contract. A good backup and rotational player, not to mention he provides competition and injury insurance for Floyd, and if he plays well enough and we are able to sign him long term, he makes sense to replace Robison on the roster or Floyd if we let him go next year. Also, despite it not being the best fit, he could fill in at linebacker if absolutely needed.

let's see if Zimmer can get more out of him than Dom Capers did.

I don't think Jones would have any problem bulking up to 295+. With his athleticism and length he could be a real threat as a 1-gap UT.

He's said to have been down to 270. At some point in the future 295 is possible but gaining 25+ lbs and retaining it in a short time frame, along with being as active as an NFL player and being in shape is pretty hard to do.

Putting on that weight may take away parts of his game he does best. It's not like his body would be used to carrying around that weight

280-285 range is probably best for him and reasonable for this year.

Jones is not a DT. Jones is a pure 4-3 LDE that has the potential to occasionally move inside to UT on passing downs, similar to how Robison does. I don't see Jones pushing Floyd for a roster spot because he is not a full time interior DL player. I also don't see a situation where Jones plays linebacker for us unless it is an emergency or a situation to disguise blitzes with the LDE dropping into a zone. He doesn't do much in coverage and is much more of a pass rusher. He is an ideal replacement on our roster for Robison who will turn 34 in April as a third DE. I think he is a much better fit in Zimmer's defense than Robison because with his size he will be able to hold up better against the run than Robison can. I can see him being a similar player to Kenechi Udeze in a 4-3.
