I'm a fan of this signing

I remember reading this pre-Super Bowl

Quote:
“He’s the type of guy who you really don’t appreciate until you’re on a team with him,” Shanahan told The Undefeated this week. “But once you’re around him, and you see how he goes about his job each day and that he’s always prepared, you realize he’s exactly the type of guy you want on your team. You need guys like him on your team.”

Throughout his 10 years in the NFL, Weems has always made an extremely positive impression, if mostly off-field. No one in his position sticks around in the NFL as long as he has if that isn’t true. Coaches love him because he’s drama-free. Shanahan and Falcons wide receivers coach Raheem Morris never worry about Weems dropping the ball – literally or figuratively – if they call on him in a pinch. And he’s the Falcons’ leader on special teams.

I actually like that we have focused on SPT. Last year we focused on offensive line and the run game and look how much that improved. This past season our special teams were trash and now they are focusing attention on that. Makes me think a players with return value may be drafted if we don't walk away with one in FA.

If there's anything I learned from watching this team the past few years, it's to never take special teams for granted.

Resigned Palmer
Signed Bates, Trawick, and now Weems.

We coming for that #1 SPT unit. Weems is likely our new returner(at least KR).

Cool.

Again, we see a clear plan and direction. We will see if it actually works out, but I'm glad they are able to see a weakness and attack it.

Good deal.

Why? He was 6th in the NFL in yards per punt return with 11.4 and if he qualified would be 6th in yards per kickoff return.

11.4 yards per punt return vs Mariani's 8.1

23 yards per kick return vs Mariani's 21.5.

Hope they didnt bring him in as returner.

Only because all Falcons fans seem to think he makes bad decisions and are happy he's going.

Weems had a 73 yard punt return last year. It would be 72 yards more than Mariani's longest return last year.Smile

So improvement!

Mariani was sure handed as any returner in the league but I would cringe watching him actually return the kick. His acceleration is gone. It's an improvement IMO.

I would prefer if we saw him as a backup return man, and only the primary option if we fail to truly upgrade. He doesn't have the burst he used to... at least to be relied on primarly as the returner. I still think, or hope... that we'll address returner at some point... preferably in the draft... and with a player that is expected to contribute significantly at their respective position (RB, WR, CB, S). Wonder if it will raise the stock slightly of some players that can be returners... the Peppers, Adorees, etc...

I like the attention to STs... I'm just trying to piece together an active roster. We have 6 guys now that will be active on game days, who's primary/only roles are as STs (K, P, LS, and the 3 new guys).

What happens when a few injuries pile up, and we need them to play snaps on offense or defense, respectively? It probably won't come up... maybe. If we're going to focus on STs, I'd rather get guys who could play O/D if needed, guys like Stafford (who played 600+ snaps last year, 2nd only to Byard at S). Is Trawick able to play signifcant S snaps? Do we really expect to throw passes Weems' way?
