Denver doesn't even have a LT so can't laugh at this.

Why ya'll act like you're new to free agency every year? Players are getting paid more and more.
Because he sucked last year and somehow just got more. I assumed the details of this will show he is gambling on himself again

Honestly, even though this leaves Denver with no OT, let alone LT, I am so, so glad we didn't pony up.

I would rather sign Clady again for a cheap 1 year deal and draft a R2/R3 OT as insurance (Which knowing Clady is REALLY necessary) than pay Okung the 11M he was owed, much less make him the top paid LT in the league.

Its just insane.

No tricks to Russell Okung's 4-year, $53M deal with #Chargers. He got $10M signing bonus, fully gtd base salaries of $3M in '17, $12M in '18

Pretty much what I said, 2 year deal - easy as pie to get out form under in Y3. Paid a higher APY across those two years to get the early-out with minimal dead money. Likely offset some by King Dunlap who'll get released between now and the 18th (when his roster bonus guarantees) which takes a shade under $5.5M off the ledger (of a due $8.6M 2017 cap-hit).

Okung is a better agent than he is a LT. Shows you how desperate the Chargers are to give an average at best LT, top money. At the very least he's been healthy lately.

That's still $25mil for 2 seasons. Most contracts are judged based off the guarantees. That's a decent amount of cash for Okung regardless of how you look at it.

The deal LBC posted is still a terrible one for Okung. Keep telling yourself he isn't bad though.

And it's, unfortunately, a bad free agent class and not a great OT class. Meanwhile the Chargers had a starting LOT with a massive concussion history who just popped for violating a restraining order earlier in the offseason, and little else behind him in the way of a viable LOT.

Okung was poor last season... depending on who you ask. Obviously you can't be "good" when you're on the field, but I definitely recall Denver fans thumping their chests over the genius of Elway after the preseason and first two games of the season he had. And in Seattle, the case was never the quality of his play, but rather that he couldn't consistently stay on the field.

Now obviously (particularly as we're talking the ChargIRs here) the later part is a concern, but a two year deal in a competitive market isn't the tragedy people are making it out to be; certainly not ideal, but some of you make it out like it's acid rain. Folks are too hung up on the "highest-paid OT" bit - particularly when Trent Williams' guarantees blew this out of the water (for good reason!), Andrew Whitworth just got $12M/yr on this same market.

There's always going to be discrepancy too because Tyron Smith gave the Cowboys an absolute sweetheart deal which, this year, has him as only the 14th-highest cap-hit for a LT.

Can't be happy about this, but I guess it's a "last coke in the desert" situation...

If we get Seatle's Okung it will be OK.

Well, Adios King Dunlap.

But I'm still trying to figure out where they found the cap room for this; they were up against it.

Unless an announcement of a Melvin Ingram contract extension is forthcoming too that takes his '17 cap number well below the franchise tag.

I found the answer to this. Besides the cap relief from releasing Fluker, Flowers, and Stevie; Okung contract currently only takes 5.5 million from the cap.
