Jeez.... lesson here is to draft OL and pass rushers high and develop them, so you don't have to overpay for them on the open market.

Gotta imagine part of the reason the market is so high for OL this offseason is because how weak the draft class is this year. By my count, there are about 3 OL overall who I think could eventually be pro-bowl players.

You all are silly. This isn't the worst deal of free agency. It isn't even the worst deal the ChargIRs have done so far. We resigned Addae to some ridiculous contract too you know.

We're bordering right now on Browns type incompetence.

Addae's contract wasn't ridiculous though. I would have gotten another player since Addae has injury issues as well. But the contract was actually reasonable.

Almost 6m per for a depth quality player that can't stay healthy isn't ridiculous to you?

Well, first of all I don't just look at the total contract. I also look at the guaranteed numbers because that's the second most important part. And second, I also look at how "guaranteed" those numbers actually are which is the most important part of NFL contracts.

Addae sucks and shouldn't have gotten more then vet min. Anything over that is ridiculous.

Okung was a declined option rather than an actual FA, which means he isn't covered by legal tampering. LA gonna lose a very high draft pick.

It's also because OL are no longer the "safe picks" that they used to be. I think it was Geoff Schwartz pointed out the other day that the success-rate of developing OL these days is significant lower ever since the new CBA went into place and limited contact-practices. OL need reps more than anything to stay sharp and these guys aren't getting that these days.

I mean I'm sure this is a front loaded deal but this is still an overpay, even if FA made his market ridiculous giving a medicore Injury prone LT who was a bad starter last year the most money at his position is still bad business.

I get why they did it but you probably could've gotten Beachum for 4 million less at least, Either way this sets a bad precedent for future contracts the chargers hand out.

I really hope this is a front loaded deal and the "25 million guarenteed" is just the signing bonus and a year to year thing.

I'm still waiting to hear back from a former agent I'm familiar with, but just looking at the initial (rough) breakdown of the contract, it looks like a 2-year deal where he's year-to-year with minimal dead-money to cling to the ledger after those two years if he's released. And, like it or not, you have to concede something in negotiations if you want that kind of out from a player that is seeking a long-term deal (some promise of job-security), and that tends to mean paying a higher AAV in order to get the concession of frontloading the guarantees.

This is all before seeing whether or not the "guarantees" have triggers or benchmarks in them, such as "if on the roster by Day 3 of the new 201_ league year, that annual salary becomes guaranteed."

Reminds of that book NFL Confidential. The story of a guy trying to be the best backup ever so that he could get paid a lot without actually playing.
