As fans, especially in the age of Madden and fantasy football, we tend to look at adding players in the draft in terms of positional holes that need filling.

However, I think TT & MM have a different way of looking at things. Each draft, as they're talking in the various press conferences about the picks they've made, I get the sense that they went into the draft with an overarching purpose or theme. They don't think as much about "We need a pass rusher" or "We're thin at CB" as they do about "We need to get tougher" or "We need to get faster." It's like they focus less on how players impact the positional depth chart, and more on how they impact the makeup and identity of the team as a whole.

I don't remember many specific "themes". I seem to recall one year that really seemed to focus on special teams, and one that seemed to key in on adding explosiveness, especially in the Front 7.

I'm curious...has anyone else noticed this or thought about this? Or is it just me?

More importantly, if this is at least a part of their outlook, what do you think this year's theme will be?

To me, we need to get faster on Defense, and I feel like that's been the case for quite some time now. Having technically sound guys is nice and all but athletic teams like Atlanta will just flat out dominate the 1-on-1 matchups.

I hope it is get faster. After Shields went down, do we have anyone on the team that we can call fast? Jordy? Janis? Davis?

Even HaHa ran like a 4.6.

We invested our first two draft picks at CB two years ago and they turned in a sophomore slump mainly due to injuries this year. I think we draft two more this year because you can never have enough corners. The EDGE position is a bit worse IMHO. Too many ?'s and we need an impact player there. I think they take McKinley or Lawson in the first and draft the best CB on their board in the 2nd, possibly the 3rd as well unless a good RB falls down the boards. Heck, they might even trade down from 29 or 61 if they feel they can still get their preferred player. FWIW We were 6th in the league in sacks with roughly half of those sacks coming from Peppers and Perry alone. Take them away and that makes us dead last in that category; nevermind the overwhelming lack of a pass rush during the postseason.

Even HaHa ran like a 4.6.

Randall, Hawkins, Dorleant all ran in the 4.4 range.

HaHa ran in the 4.5's.

Cook is definitely fast for a TE.

I hope we get faster, too. Especially our ILBs. Ryan and Martinez ran decent 40s but aren't very twitchy athletes...

Pass rush for sure, it's so inconsistent. I think we need to bring in a veteran corner and at least draft another one. RB in the later rounds, maybe more oline depth if Tretter, Lang, Barclay etc go.

I think you hit the nail on the head. The Packers need to get faster and particularly in their front 7. LB play was bad or inconsistent most of the year and Clay seems better suited to be an ILB or at least a LB who lines up almost anywhere. DL was just ok and the DB's ere bad, much due to injuries and a lot due to lack of speed.

Would be nice if he could find the field

Make Dom Capers defense above average again sounds like a good theme

Or if we could find a way to use someone with remarkable speed creatively without requiring them to flawlessly memorize the entire playbook

The Packers have fielded an above average defense in 3 of the last 5 seasons

2012... #11 in points allowed
2014... # 13 in points allowed
2015... # 12 in points allowed

Its true, you can look it up... Cool
