Welcome to my NBA 2k17 Nets Franchise. I previously ran an expansion team Supersonics Franchise, but I screwed up the progression settings so I ended up abandoning that league. This time I know how to better manage the progression. I’ve chosen the Nets as they should be the most difficult team to build. I’ve also established some rules for myself to make the league even harder.

Here are the rules for the franchise I’ll be playing by:

- The regular seasons are way too long. I will only be playing playoff games myself. This means I could be potentially simming several seasons before I ever play a game.

- I will only accept trade offers sent from the computer or offers from the computer in the trade block. If I do manual trades its too easy to manipulate the computer into lopsided offers.

- All draft classes will be auto generated.

- I cannot trade for any picks after the lottery (so essentially I’ll never know the exact pick I’m trading for).

- I will not trade UP in the draft ever. Trading down is fine. If I trade up a bunch of times and always land superstar players it makes the rebuild too easy.

- I’ll be playing on Superstar difficulty with 6 minute quarters (set to alter stats to full minutes). Simmed games are full 12 min quarters.

Year 1 Goals Given From the Owner

1. Keep average team morale above 60. (This will be difficult as I expect I’ll make several trade this year that will disrupt the roster)
2. Don’t break any promises you’ve made to players. (Easy enough)
3. Don’t lose more than 44 games this season. (I doubt this happens)
4. Trade either KJ McDaniels or Randy Foye. (I’ll likely trade both)

Year 1 Budget

Player Payroll - $113.29 mil
Staff Payroll - $11.00 mil
Arena Operations - $7.89 mil
Team Operations - $30.00 mil
Promotions - $4.50 mil

Year 1 Opening Day Roster

PG – Jeremy Lin (79 OVR) – 31 min
SG – Sean Kilpatrick (77 OVR) – 28 min
SF – Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (75 OVR) – 28 min
PF – Trevor Booker (79 OVR) – 29 min
C – Brooks Lopez (83 OVR) – 34 min

6th man, PF – Luis Scola (76 OVR) – 29 min
7, PG – Isaiah Whitehead (75 OVR) – 24 min
8, PG – Spencer Dinwiddie (74 OVR) – 20 min
9, SG – Caris LeVert (74 OVR) – 17 min
10, PF – Quincy Acy (73 OVR) – 0 min
11, C – Justin Hamilton (72 OVR) –0 min
12, SG – Joe Harris (72 OVR) – 0 min
13, SG – Randy Foye (71 OVR) – 0 min
Inactive, PF – Andrew Nicholson (71 OVR) – 0 min
Inactive, SG – KJ McDaniels (70 OVR) – 0 min

Strategy this Season

Blow this roster up. Tanking won’t really help since I don’t have my own pick for the next two years, but honestly I’m probably going to suck no matter what I do. I need to trade whatever I can to get draft picks. I currently have a lottery protected 2017 pick from the Wizards, and I’ll have Boston’s pick once they swap with mine this year too. I have no first round picks for 2018 at all, but starting in 2019 I have my first.

*TRADE*

New York Knicks Receive

C Brook Lopez (83)
2017 Nets 2nd Round Pick

Brooklyn Nets Receive

2018 Knicks 1st Round Pick (Top 5 Protected)
C Joakim Noah

This gives me what should be a lottery pick in the 2018 draft. But I did have to give up my 2nd round pick this year, and I had to take back Noah’s awful 4-year $72 mil deal. Pretty terrible return for an All-Star Center but the market is flooded with good Centers.

*TRADE*

Phoenix Suns Receive

SG KJ McDaniels (68)

Brooklyn Nets Receive

2017 Suns 2nd Round Pick
PF Alan Williams (71)

I was ordered by my owner to trade McDaniels, So I picked up another guy on a cheap deal and got back a 2017 2nd .

Top 10 Draft Prospects According to Draft Express

1. SF/PF – Elton Kennedy – 6’8” 217 lbs (7’2” Wingspan), Arizona, 80 OVR, A+ Potential
2. PF – Javier Cortez – 6’11” 252 lbs (7’4” WS), Spain, 77 OVR, A Potential
3. SG – Luis Booth – 6’2” 191 lbs (6’2” WS), UCLA, 76 OVR, B+ Potential
4. PG – Howie Holmes – 6’2” 182 lbs (6’7” WS), Georgetown, 72 OVR, B+ Potential
5. PF/C – Chucky Pederson – 6’9” 276 lbs (7’3” WS), Oklahoma St, 71 OVR, A Potential
6. PF – Jake Snow – 6’8” 249 lbs (7’2” WS), George Washington, 72 OVR, B Potential
7. SG/PG – Uwe Lindemann – 6’6” 218 lbs (6’10” WS), Germany, 70 OVR, B- Potential
8. C – Otis Drew – 6’11” 239 lbs (6’11” WS), Notre Dame, 71 OVR, B+ Potential
9. SF – Tomas Monroe – 6’8” 231 lbs (7’0” WS), Richmond, 72 OVR, B- Potential
10. SF/PF – Dirk Schumacher – 6’9” 229 lbs (6’9” WS), Germany, 67 OVR, B Potential

This doesn’t appear to be a very strong first draft class, but I doubt I end up landing anyone in this top 10 with the picks that I have. The class is littered with undersized bigs, but a couple of guys have pretty good potential. The best shooters in the group are Holmes and Monroe. Booth is very athletic and a good perimeter defender but can’t shoot at all. Cortez and Pederson are the top rebounders, and Cortez is the best interior defender of the group. Kennedy looks like the only legit star of the group, he’s solid all around.

All Star Break Update

I currently have a 20-36 record, which is 14th in the East and 24.5 games out of first place. Surprisingly, I’m only 7 games behind the 8 seed, but I’m betting that gets worse before the end of the year. I don’t see myself making the playoffs this year so I’m going to make another deal or two before the trade deadline.

*TRADE*

Phoenix Suns Receive

PG Jeremy Lin (79)

Brooklyn Nets Receive

2017 Suns 1st Round Pick (Top 10 Protected)
C Tyson Chandler (78)

Well, I’m not sure why the Suns wanted another mediocre PG for their roster but now they have one. I also added another horrible contract at Center, and Chandler and Noah definitely can’t play together on the floor so it’s a terrible fit. But I did land another 2017 first with this deal. And, the Suns would actually be in the playoffs right now if they started, so the protection wouldn’t affect the pick right now. I’ll have to try and dump one of Noah or Chandler in the offseason.

Offseason Happenings

The #1 seed Cavaliers won the NBA Championship over the #3 seed Rockets (Rockets beat Warriors in 7 games in WCF, also Steph Curry was out for the season with a major injury).
Lebron James won Finals MVP.
Notable Retirements: Paul Pierce, Manu Ginobili, Caron Butler, Tayshaun Prince
Staff Retirements: None
HOF Inductees: Paul Pierce
Jersey Retirements: #34 Paul Pierce (Celtics), #20 Manu Ginobili (Spurs)

Draft Lottery

I don’t have any lottery picks this year, which sucks. The Celtics have my pick from the swap they have with me, which gives the 4th best odds, which really sucks. The top 5 odds are:

1. Hornets (25.0%)
2. Bucks (19.9%)
3. Magic (13.8%)
4. Celtics via Nets (13.7%)
5. Lakers (7.6%) – Lakers only retain if its top 3, otherwise pick goes to 76ers

Who’s it going to be…..

Lakers pick remained at 5 so it goes to the 76ers. Celtics jumped from 4 to 3, which dropped the Hornets out of the top 3, ouch for them. Bucks were #2 and the Magic landed the #1 pick.

I have the 16th and 22nd picks in this draft.

2017 NBA Draft

Draft Picks
Round 1 – 16 overall
Round 1 – 22 overall
Round 2 – 57 overall

Well since I’ve set a rule that I can’t trade up in any draft, all I can do is sit back and wait to see who drops to me at 16. I will be taking the best player available regardless of position, since I need everything. I’ll take a look a trade offers for the picks, but my roster really needs some young talent added to it so I will probably use both picks in this draft. I’ll probably try to trade the 2nd for something, as I doubt there will be anyone of value at 57 overall.
With the #1 overall pick the Magic select Elton Kennedy, the best player in this draft. That should give them a quality wing, something they lack. #2 overall is SG Luis Booth to the Bucks, he’s the best athlete in the draft. Celtics select PF Javier Cortez with my pick at #3, he’s the best inside defender/rebounder in the draft. The Hornets and 76ers flipped the 4th and 5th picks. PG Howie Holmes goes to the 76ers at 4, he’s the best shooter in the draft. And honestly a pairing a shooting PG with Simmons is probably a good move for them. PF Chucky Pederson rounds out the top 5 to the Hornets.

I’m going to sim to my pick at 16.

Here are the top players available at 16:

C Frankie Daniels – 7’0” 289 lbs (7’4” WS), Clemson – DE Rank #11 - 73 OVR with B- potential. Daniels is huge, a good rebounder and all around defender. He’s pretty terrible offensively and his potential isn’t amazing. He does have the Brick Wall and Bruiser Badges as well, which would really make him a force inside. Daniels is a little one dimensional but honestly I don’t use my Centers that much on offense, so he would be a good fit for me.

PF Gene Garrett – 6’9” 254 lbs (7’1” WS), Memphis – DE Rank #17 – 69 OVR with B potential. Garrett is an interesting prospect at PF. He’s not super tall but he’s stout, and he can shoot both from mid range and 3 point range. He’s a solid rebounder and not a terrible defender. He doesn’t have any badges though.

SG Curtis Hines – 6’7” 227 lbs (7’1” WS), Kentucky – DE Rank #21 – 68 OVR with C potential. Hines is the best shooter available, and he has really good length too. On top of that he has the Catch & Shoot, Charge Card and Pick Pocket badges. The problem is he is really really slow. His ratings are 62 SPD and 53 ACC. His potential isn’t great either. I don’t think I can make him my first pick of this administration. If he’s there at 22 I’ll consider him.

C Reginald Curtis – 7’2” 269 lbs (7’4” WS), England – DE Rank #22 – 66 OVR with A- potential. Curtis is a little bigger than Daniels and he has a higher potential rating. But at 66 and Daniels at 73 OVR, that potential rating might not be that big of a difference. Curtis does have the Break Starter and Hustle Rebounder badges. I think Curtis would be a reach at 16 but if he’s still there at 22 I might consider him.

I didn’t receive any reasonable trade down offers so I’m just going to make my pick.

With the 16th pick in the NBA draft the Brooklyn Nets select:

PF Gene Garrett – 6’9” 254 lbs (7’1” WS), Memphis – DE Rank #17 – 69 OVR with B potential.
I think this is the right pick. He’s the most versatile of the players available and has good upside. I need people who can score too.

I’m hoping Daniels somehow falls all the way to 22. And of course Daniels goes 17th. Reginald Curtis goes 19th to the Raptors. That really sucks, but honestly I’m probably going to be stuck playing either Noah or Chandler next year anyways, so Center wasn’t an immediate need. There are usually a ton of good Centers in every draft too.

I’m on the clock again. That SG Curtis Hines is still on the board. Once again I’m not getting any reasonable trade offers, so I think he’s my pick:

With the 22nd pick in the NBA draft the Brooklyn Nets select:

SG Curtis Hines – 6’7” 227 lbs (7’1” WS), Kentucky – DE Rank #21 – 68 OVR with C potential.
Well he will be a statue out there but at least I’m adding shooters to my roster.

Nothing left to do now but sim to my late 2nd round pick. I tried to flip my late 2nd rounder for a future 2nd round pick but got no takers. I don’t have anyone scouted this deep so I’m just going to take the guy at the top of the draft board.

With the 57th pick in the NBA draft the Brooklyn Nets select:

C Quinn Wiltjer – 7’0” 257 lbs (7’0” WS), Kansas St – DE Rank #37 – OVR and Potential unknown.
Well at least he’s tall.

That finishes my first draft. I think adding some offense to the roster couldn’t hurt so I feel pretty good about this draft. Not having any lottery picks kept me from getting anyone who will make an early impact but I think these guys should develop into good role players down the line at least.

Team Options

SG Sean Kilpatrick (78) - $1.05 mil – tendered – He’ll probably start for me for awhile this year, but I’ll probably look into what I can get for him on the trade market.

SF Rondae Hollis-Jefferson (77) - $1.46 mil – tendered – He’s athletic and a good defender. He’ll probably start this year.

PG Spencer Dinwiddie (75) - $1.01 mil – tendered – For now he’s a good backup PG.

SG Joe Harris (74) - $1.05 mil – not tendered – I have too many SGs on the roster so I’m letting Harris leave.

Qualifying Offers

PF Alan Williams (75) - $1.42 mil – tendered – I picked up Williams in a random trade last year and he’s progressed into a decent prospect that could be another trade chip down the line. If someone offers him a big deal I’ll let him walk but hopefully I can keep him cheap.

Team Free Agents

PF Luis Scola (75) – no offer – He’s 37 years old and doesn’t fit into my rebuilding plans
PF Quincy Acy (74) – no offer – I have better PF prospects on the roster.
SG Randy Foye (73) – no offer – old and not very good.

Free Agency

I don’t plan on being a big player in free agency as I want to build through the draft. I need a backup SF just to fill out my rotation, otherwise I’m going to sit out of the rest of the mess.

SF Okaro White – 3 years, $3.03 mil – White’s a good 3 point shooter with decent athleticism. He’s only 24 years old and I signed him to a 3 year deal around only $1 mil per season.

Also I retained PF Williams at the tendered amount.

Major Contract Signings:

PG Chris Paul – Clippers – 3 years, $97.38 mil
PG Steph Curry – Warriors – 5 years, $145.10 mil
SG Dion Waiters – Magic – 3 years, $52.58 mil
SF Gordon Hayward – Jazz – 5 years, $144.58 mil
PF Serge Ibaka – Pacers – 3 years, $66.79 mil
SF Rudy Gay – Suns – 3 years, $57.47 mil
PG Kyle Lowry – Raptors – 4 years, $132.63 mil
PF Blake Griffin – Clippers – 4 years, $113.68 mil
PG Jrue Holiday – Pelicans – 5 years, $125.74 mil
SF Otto Porter – Wizards – 4 years, $94.74 mil
PG Jeff Teague – 76ers – 4 years, $113.68 mil
PF Paul Millsap – Kings – 4 years, $119.93 mil
SF Kevin Durant – Lakers – 4 years, $132.63 mil

*TRADE*

Orlando Magic Receive
C Joakim Noah (76)

Brooklyn Nets Receive
Bismack Biyombo (74)
2018 Magic 2nd round Pick

I needed to dump either Noah or Chandler (maybe both) and this isn’t a great move to dump salary but it’s the best offer I could get. I’m moving Noah’s 3 year $55 mil deal for Biyombo’s 2 year $34 mil deal. Also, Biyombo is only 24 years old and Noah is 32. Orlando even through in a draft pick for me. I might try to move Chandler too and start Biyombo to see if he will progress any.

*TRADE*

Atlanta Hawks Receive
C Tyson Chandler (77)

Brooklyn Nets Receive
SF Deandre Bembry (69)
2018 Hawks 2nd Round Pick

Chandler is still a good player, so I don’t know if dumping him is a great idea but I really want his salary gone. Bembry is a young cheap prospect and I get another pick. This trade will let Biyombo start too.
