Patriots hosted RFA Mike Gillisee for a visit, rapsheet just tweeted. I've been saying all off-season I'd love him here. Replacing Blount with Burkhead and Gillisee? Yes please. _________________ (XXXVI) (XXXVIII) (XXXIX) (XLIX) (LI) |

Would only take a 5th, assuming we make an offer and Bills don't match. I wouldn't be opposed to it but we might as well just skip the draft at this point. _________________

I'd rather keep the 5th rounder than get Gillislee. My understanding is he's a bad blocker so you don't even get better pass protection from vet over the rookie. _________________

Pats also hosted Dolphins RFA Damien Williams, who signed an original-round (UDFA) tender. _________________

I would much prefer Gillisie over Williams (who was pretty bad), but I would be happy with James Conner from Pittsburgh in the 5th, too. |

From Ian Rapoport:
Here we go: #Patriots extended an RFA offer sheet to #Bills RB Mike Gillislee. It’s for 2 years, $6.4M, source said. $4M in the 1st year.
Big move if this signing gets completed. Have to wonder what will happen to White and Lewis in the backfield if we get Gillislee since we already have Burkhead.
EDIT: I think this means we have to give up a fifth round pick to the Bills if the Bills don't match which, I doubt they will. BB is really liking this draft... _________________

Seems pricey for Gillislee, no? _________________

It's pricey, but with our cap space, front loading a deal makes a ton of sense. _________________

Wow, we just can't lose this off-season. My number 1 concern was the RB position, and if the Bills don't match, we replaced Blount with Gillislee and Burkhead. That's a nice upgrade, IMO.
This team is going to be loaded. _________________ (XXXVI) (XXXVIII) (XXXIX) (XLIX) (LI) |

Don't completely get the move, he was productive in limited snaps for Buffalo, but it's a shedload of cash for someone who has such limited experience, and at a posiion where we already signed someone to a decent contract.
White, Lewis, Burkhead, Gillislee feels too crowded, especially since Bolden is definitely a lock. Five rosters spots + Develin for the backfield seems like a lot.
What were the terms of Lewis' extension? Is he cuttable without much of a hit? _________________ Adopt-a-Pat

I would not call Bolden a lock, he wasnt even a lock to re-sign. Special teams is important and it can get you a roster spot, but it by no means guarantees you a roster spot.
Jeff Howe says its unlikely the Bills match BTW _________________

Apparently James White just signed a 3 year extension:

Pumped to hear this. I love me some James White _________________

What's clear is the Patriots are prepared to invest more money on RB than I think they ever have in the Belichick-Brady era (not sure about the two years with Dillon). Looks like the end of Blount, and possibly Lewis as well. |

Burkhead, Gillisliee, Lewis and White is a nice stable of backs. They can all definitely coexist on the same roster, at least for a year. Then, in 2018, one or both of Burkhead/Lewis will be gone.
Lewis seems like the possible odd man out with his durability and fumble issues. He's not really a good receiving back, not much of a run down guy. He's very limited, albeit good in that limited role. I don't foresee him having much of a future in New England regardless of whether or not Gillislee is acquired. |
