Rich Hill speculates the Patriots will be interested in RFA Mike Gillislee. I wonder what the Bills will tender him at.

Not saying any of these guys would be good signings, just keeping the thread updated with noteworthy FAs.

Not really sure if Peterson is realistic, but vets (Ocho Cinco, Taylor) have come here casing rings.

I was watching Brian Hill last night and he'd be a pretty good mid round RB. Seems to have good vision and is similar to the Lawfirm in how he always minimizes loss and gets a yard or two. Also doesn't fumble much(5 in 3 years 1 last year). And he has similar athleticism to Ridley and will be caught from behind on those long runs. Also just love contact. He also looks pretty decent running routes and reading blitz pickup. Awful hands though.

Bring in Morris. Dude has talent. 28 years old. I thought if Elliot couldn't fix his fumble problems at first Morris would start getting more carries and light it up behind that line.

Like the player. He'd be a good fit imo.

Gillislee would be an OK fit; pass blocking is suspect.

He's a good runner but, given that he can't block, some other team is going to pay way more for him than we will.

Morris would be a great pickup but he's straddling the line between being a good backup and a mediocre starter. He's just too dang slow

Certainly wouldn't mind having Morris over Blount. I don't have the numbers offhand, but I feel like he'd be better in short yardage situations.

I don't have the stats but, I think Blount was on the money this year with his short yardage runs. Probably better than Morris honestly.

Morris is useless in the pass game. Awful as a blocker and inept as a receiver. He's worse than Blount in both aspects which makes him a pretty bad backup. He needs to go to a team that is a run first team and be a rotational guy or part timer. Assuming he has anything left to offer which I'm skeptical of.

3 yards or shorter:

Morris 16 runs, 10 first downs (or touchdowns)
Blount 56 runs, 33 first downs (or touchdowns)

For those curious for Blount's breakdown:

1 yard to go: 33 attempts, 24 first downs
2 yards to go: 13 attempts, 5 first downs
3 yards to go: 10 attempts, 4 first downs

Overall: 59%

For a random comparison, I took

Carlos Hyde:

1 yard to go: 14 attempts, 10 first downs
2 yards to go: 10 attempts, 6 first downs
3 yards to go: 7 attempts, 3 first downs

Overall 61%

DeMarco Murray

1 yard to go: 30 attempts, 23 first downs
2 yards to go: 14 attempts, 9 first downs
3 yards to go: 11 attempts, 3 first downs

Overall 64%

Lamar Miller

1 yard to go: 16 attempts, 13 first downs
2 yards to go: 15 attempts, 11 first downs
3 yards to go: 8 attempts, 5 first downs

Overall 74%

Blount isn't the worst at short yardage guy in the world but he's not especially good and gets badly overrated in that aspect.

The Patriots have averaged less than 4 yards per carry 3 straight years and in 2013 it was just 4.0

I don't think thats all on the running backs being bad or mediocre

On average, we haven't made the run game a primary way of moving down the field so, I'm not surprised by this.

Hopefully James White can morph into Tomlinson and develop some sort of ground game. If he can develop any semblance of a ground game, frankly I'm ok rolling with Lewis + White and some random backup like Gaffney

On top of that, all of Morris's success has come in zone-blocking schemes. That Patriots run a power blocking run game.
