Ordinarily, you’d expect the worst teams to have a lot of salary cap space and the best teams to have very little salary cap space because the best teams have a lot of good players to pay. Heading into 2017, there’s one exception to that: The Super Bowl champion Patriots.

While nine of the 10 teams with the most cap space available in 2017 were teams that missed the playoffs, the 10th is the Patriots. Via Spotrac, the Patriots head into 2017 with $63 million in cap space, which is the sixth-most in the NFL. Only the Browns, 49ers, Buccaneers, Titans and Jaguars have more cap space than the Patriots.

That’s a testament to the way Bill Belichick has run the team since taking over in 2000: Belichick is always very careful not to overpay for players, and he doesn’t hesitate to let high-priced veteran players walk and replace them with inexpensive younger players.

7 Super Bowl appearances, 5 Super Bowl wins, 6 straight AFC Championship games, playoffs in 14 of 17 seasons and Belichick the GM will still be bashed by some on this forum within 3 months.

If they're smart they'll use the cap space they have to take on more money in the earlier years of contracts of guys like High and Butler if they lock him up this offseason. Open up more cap space in those later years when the cap will be even higher

Hightower and Butler are gonna consume soooo much cap space. Hightower should be asking for bigger than Collins money for sure.

They should get it. They are by far the biggest defensive contributors and have been getting paid well below market value. We let Revis walk, we let go of Collins and Jones. I have to believe they know these guys are the big defensive priorities.

My guess for Hightower was 5 for 52 (or 4/44), and Butler about 5 for 60-65.

Comps:

Linebacker
Luke Kuechly - 5/62
Navorro Bowman - 4/42
Bobby Wagner - 4/43

Cornerback
Patrick Peterson - 5/70
Josh Norman - 5/75
Richard Sherman - 4/56
Darrelle Revis - 5/70
Janoris Jenkins - 5/62.5

I have a feeling that Butler will take a slightly more team friendly deal, not like a big discount, but not like Revis or Norman money.

Hightower is probably looking to become the highest paid LB in the league

I agree on Butler. The deals of Norman and Revis were both open market deals. Butler is still a RFA, so the team is effectively buying out a year of free agency on the cheap. 5/60 makes sense to me.
