Some quick thoughts after re-watching this one:

Great post. I haven't had a chance to rewatch the game yet, but here are some quick thoughts in reference to a few of your observations.

Quote:
Says a lot about Blount that when the Pats absolutely had to have yards to tie/win a Super Bowl, it was James White getting the ball

In a way, Blount's ineptitude could have cost the Pats dearly. When they brought him in as a decoy on the penultimate play of the game, the Falcons didn't seem too concerned (they weren't overly aggressive in response to Blount's run fake) and Beasley was able to tip Brady's pass to Bennett. Despite the gaudy touchdown numbers this year, both the Pats and their opponents recognize that Blount isn't a truly dangerous goal line/short yardage back.

Quote:
- White was phenomenal in this game. I thought he started to turn a corner in his development in the summer/early season then he went back to being the guy who looked pretty marginal last year, then he shows up in the biggest way on the biggest stage. I still would like to see a RB who can catch on White's level but who could also run. Or maybe White can develop a little as a runner. He proved me wrong in a big way this year.

One important aspect to White's game is Brady's trust in him to make the right reads and be in the right place. When the Falcons moved to zone on the game-tying drive, White reacted perfectly, allowing for two quick and safe gains on consecutive first down plays to set up the short touchdown run.

Quote:
- All of the "Bennett isn't worth the money, he didn't have big catches" etc people are really missing out on a huge part of his value - the blocking. He had some critical blocks down the stretch in the Super Bowl. I have to wonder how much his injuries affected his receiving ability

I agree with this, but from Bennett's comments, including comments immediately after the game, I think he wants to get big money somewhere. It might be for the best, as while Bennett's quirky personality was a good fit in this contract year, while he was chasing his first team accolades, it's easy to envision a scenario where the Pats/Bennett relationship sours in the longterm.

Quote:
- Atlanta's coaching staff was straight up outclassed all day. They dominated early thanks to great performances from their key players and the Pats sloppy play. I don't think anything they did early was a result of especially good gameplanning as much as great execution.

In fairness to Atlanta's coaches though: they did seem to take the Pats by surprise by coming out and playing so much man coverage on defense early in the game. But I agree that great early execution on their part, coupled with poor execution by the Pats also played a major role early in the game.

Quote:
- Hightower is a playoff legend IMO. Two Super Bowls with huge plays, an overall rock solid player. Need him back for 3-5 more years though I think he will decline quickly

Agreed. Best to aim to sign Hightower for 3 years and hope that he doesn't decline while Brady is still playing at an elite level.

Quote:
- Didn't miss Chandler Jones or Jamie Collins one bit.

Definitely agree. Especially about Jones. It's hard to imagine him doing much to help the team in this type of game, given his history.

Quote:
- Belichick has often spoken about how long Super Bowls are and how exhausting it is. The Falcons didn't rotate their guys enough, they didn't run their O in a way to give their D a breather - both were failures on their coaching staff's part.

Agreed. It is also worth pointing out that the changes the Pats made to the S&C staff might have played a role here. Atlanta's D was fading down the stretch, but the Pats' O-line and Receivers weren't, even with an extremely high snap count. So I think that the major changes BB made to the coaching staff after last season (O-line, S&C) paid major dividends throughout the season, postseason, and in the Super Bowl itself.

Belichick learned that particular lesson in the '03 Super Bowl when he didn't carry enough defensive linemen and injuries ravaged the secondary in the 2nd half. Carolina was scoring at will, much the same way we were in the 4th quarter and OT this year, because he couldn't rotate the guys that were gassed. I think Quinn and the Falcons will be back though, they've got some very good young players on cheap deals for the next couple of years and he'll only get better as a coach from this experience.

Watching this brought a question to mind.

If a team wins the toss in OT drives the ball down to the 1 then goes four and out in an attempt to win it all but fails the ball is turned over to the other team. If on the first play the defense gets a safety is it game over?

Yup. Safety ends the gme in OT.

The game ends on a TD or a safety, so yes.

Happened to the Cincy Miami game 2 years ago. Walk off safety for the win by Cameron Wake.

Regardless of so called top rated D of 2016
Regardless of Falcons history of fail.

I could definitely see Falcons laying a beat down on the Patriots unlike the world has seen in a long long time.

Falcons need to aim for putting 70 points on the board.

Just trying to help you guys prepare mentally in advance of possible beat down.

Thank me later for atleast trying.

That said.... good luck and enjoy this week of Super Bowl media hype and intense and dramatic game itself!

Of all the first in SB LI I think my favorite is this. The Pats are the first team to win the SB and never lead for a single second in the game.
