In 2017, we're looking at how the team can improve and preventing a free fall next season and return to the playoffs. Next up, the starting DT next to Linval Hungry.

How should they address it?

Potential Free Agents: DE/DT Tyson Alualu (Jax), Nick Fairley (NO), Abry Jones (Jax), Kawann Short (Car), Johnathan Hankins (NYG), Jordan Hill (Jax), Tyrunn Walker (Det)

- Floyd gets another chance on his 5th year option.
- Someone drafted in the 4th-ish is added to compete/depth

Keep Floyd for this year, but draft someone in the 3rd-4th as a potential replacement.

I don't think Floyd will be back after this season unless he has a breakout year.

I think the team would prefer not to bring back Floyd, but may not have a better starting option with OL a top priority in both FA and the draft.

If Floyd is not on the team, the most likely avenue is FA as I can't see us getting a starting DT in round 3 or later.

Floyd has not been a bad player he has just had a hard time staying healthy, Bradford had a hard time staying healthy too. Exercise his 5th year option and hope he can stay healthy then draft some depth/competition in the middle rounds.

Well thats wrong, he's pretty dang good, just not dependable

I just made a mock drafting Carlos Watkins and a release of Floyd. I believe the team was frustrated with him.

My solution would be to move Linval to DT and replace him with someone else at NT. At DT he would be unstoppable, he is just too fast, too strong and too determined to be blocked with just one OL. I was amazed this season by his mobility, you just don't see men that size pursue all over the field like he does.

So, perhaps Hankins could be lured away from NY to play NT for us? He is listed at 320, and plenty strong, seems like a pretty good fit at NT. Plus, with Hankins and Joseph on the D-line, maybe we wouldn't be gouged by RB's like we were last season. The last game against the Bears was particularly painful in that regard. Despite the final score, they pretty much self-destructed with all of those turnovers.

Moving Linval to UT makes little sense. He's at his best when he stays square to the line of scrimmage. When he tries to use rush moves that involve him turning his shoulders he's too easily washed down or out of the play. Moving him to a 3T doesnt necessarily do anything for the number of double teams he would face. It would be similar to what we had this year with Joseph and Stephen on the field. Joseph is still more likely to be doubled in a scenario with another nose tackle on the field.

If we were to go the free agent route to bring in a reliable UT, my search starts and stops with Kawann Short.

Joseph and Stephen at NT and Floyd and a 3rd/4th rd pick at UT. There probably isn't a need for Tom Johnson if Robison is playing inside more and the selection of a mid rd UT.

That would work.

I'd prefer a rookie mid rd UT who can occasionally play DE in certain situations.

If you use Robison inside more than in the past, the other DEs may get worn down quicker during a game. I'd prefer to have 3 quality DEs, and one DL who can do both DT and DE duty. One or more DL may be injured during the year, so depth and versatility is important. Who is retained from the current DL roster will determine what type of DL Spielman should add.

I don't think Zimmer is too happy with Floyd. I think we'll attempt to trade him first, and then if that doesn't go through, then we might have an issue.

Moving Linval to UT is a non-starter ... he is a NT straight up.
I could actually see Floyd's 5th year not picked up, and perhaps Zimmer goes after one of the top UT available in free agency. Its easier to bring in a high level UT, when you both offer the $ and he knows he would be playing with a strong DL and Defense overall.

Perhaps they don't mirror there "Kalil 5th year option mistake"

They picked up his option already. Unless you're saying they cut him outright.
