There's no option to pay him $18M.... total, over the 7 years he thinks he can still play. Think

So, sticking to the scheme established....

reduce his salary drastically, to be worth about 3 million... orange peanuts.
re-sign Asiata.
draft a RB in round 4 or 5.
mix well,
then put the top 3 RBs on the regular season roster.

Damn, Tevin Coleman and Devonte Freeman both for about $800,000...

Atlanta is robbing the bank with those two!

I think it's hilarious that the Vikings highest paid receivers were Wright and Treadwell...

Mid-round draftees on rookie contracts, obviously they will be on small deals

I watched the college championship game between JMU and Youngstown State on Saturday. I was impressed with Khalid Abdullah from JMU. Runs with authority and seems pretty fast. I think he'd be an excellent day 3 draft choice.

^ If pro scouts are looking closely at RBs, they'd find him, and he wouldn't last until Day 3.... assuming they share your enthusiasm.

IMO, if AP isn't retained, Spielman needs to draft a RB no later than rd 4. Also, sign a FA RB to replace Asiata, including possibly Asiata himself!

But it seems from Zimmer's penchant for not (often) starting rookies, and Spielman retaining some vets that some fans wanted to jettison, that AP may likely return under a significantly lower salary cap number.

Cut AP
Sign a lower priced veteran
draft a RB in round 4 or later, and hope he's good
Probably cut Asiata, as I still don't know what he does well (actually, he's a decent/good receiver out of the backfield)

Until the OL fell apart, he scored TDs in goal line situations inside the 5 yd line.

Also, 3 career fumbles in 361 carries and 101 receptions. I don't know if he ran back any squib kick kickoffs.

good point on the fumbles. As for scoring with good blocking, isn't that pretty much true of most any NFL RB?

Asiata is also a good pass blocker. I don't see any reason not to bring him back. We should add someone else ahead of him to push McKinnon, but as a #3 back I really like Asiata.

^ good point on blocking.

Coaches and GMs put significant weight on the contributions by players that fans focused on basic stats often miss. That's why some fans expect role players to be cut, but they return year after year; e.g. Sherels.

I used to feel he was a good blocker, but I'm not as convinced as I was. But, if he is, then ya, if he can block and catch, then he's a nice 3rd back. He's brutally miscast as a power back, imo.

I went with draft a starter, but really, it'll be a combo with McKinnon.

I personally believe they should have let Asiata walk a season ago, so my opinion has not changed. He costs too much for what he provides. His skills are replaceable...at a much cheaper cost. The veteran minimum for him is going to be around $900K. It may not sound like much, but when you get down to the wire, with other players deserving extensions, you could save $400K or more just by letting him walk and that might be an easy pill to swallow.

I really liked what I saw from Gallman last night. He continues to be my favorite 3rd/4th round option at running back.

But I agree with disaacs, for what Asiata will cost, what he offers is replaceable.

I hate to say it but cut AP and draft a RB. More than likely two of the 1st three picks will go towards OL and the other pick towards defense. 4th round seems like the idea spot to draft a RB. This draft is loaded at RB and the Vikings under Shumar will probably take on a RB by committee approach anyway. Keep Asiata as the vetern pass blocker and special teamer at least until the McKinnon or rookie RB can be trusted as primary RB in passing situations. Eventually Ham will become the 3rd RB on the depth chart
