In 2017, we're looking at how the team can improve and preventing a free fall next season and return to the playoffs. Next, another interesting talker...the starting RB.

How should they address it?

Potential Free Agents: Danny Woodhead (SD), DeAngelo Williams (Pit), Benny Cunningham (LA), Lance Dunbar (Dal), Eddie Lacy (GB), Jacquizz Rodgers (TB), Latavius Murray (Oak), Matt Asiata (Min)

Gut feeling: Peterson will be back win a small pay cut, paired with McKinnon, and a mid-late round rookie

What I want: McKinnon paired with a 2-3rd round rookie, C.J. Ham.

I honestly believe Asiata will be gone. He never had a big roll, McKinnon took the bulk of the carries, and I believe McKinnon is a back the Vikings really like. I have a gut feeling Peterson still will be in purple next year.

I personally believe our best option would be to move on from Peterson, who was an elite RB, now maybe just a good runningback if he had time to get going, but is not an $18M/yr runningback anymore. I would prefer to move on and find another RB to pair with McKinnon to see who could be a RB of the future. I'm also a big fan of Ham, but with no playing time in his last two games active I just don't see much of him being "the guy" in Minnesota.

cut Peterson
re-sign Asiata
sign a mid-tier FA (DeAngelo Williams?)
draft a mid-late round rookie

McKinnin, FA, rookie, Asiata/Ham

Asiata and Ellison can take any FB duties. No need to keep Line.

-Release AP
-Do not retain Asiata
-Do not retain Line
-Draft RB in 3rd (MIA)
-Retain C.J Ham

RB Depth: Drafted RB [MIA 3rd], McKinnon, C.J Ham

Went with "Draft The Starter"

Arrow Would like to see AP brought back but only if he's willing to come back in that 5-7M range with incentives.

Arrow Look for a back in that 3rd/4th round range. Ideally we'd be able to land D'Onta Foreman

Arrow Let Asiata go

Arrow If AP refuses a pay cut into that 5-7M look at one of the FA options, Ideally Deangelo Williams or Danny Woodhead. I suppose we could kick the tires on someone like Eddie Lacy but he'd have to come in really cheap on an incentive based contract.

Bring in a serviceable, stop-gap, role playing running back that pairs with McKinnon and Line. Dump Peterson and Line. No need to spend big FA money, or use a top draft choice for a running back, when OL is THE need.

I'm sure most are well aware but figured this could provide some perspective on the salaries of RBs across the league for the 2017 league year.

http://overthecap.com/position/running-back/2017/

Here it is in terms of the length of the contract:

http://overthecap.com/position/running-back/

I think we can all agree that AD will not be back at his current salary. I'd be willing to have him back for $5 - $8 million. We'll see how willing he is to take a pay-cut as it takes two to tango. If not, best wishes and look to the draft. There should be someone in the draft who would be able to be a lead back.

At the end of the day I just struggle with how awesome it has been to watch AD run for the Vikes but he has always had that costly fumble. Is it smart to devote $8 million (high end of my suggestion) to have him on the team when a rookie would not cost near that? How fitting it would be if his last carry, as a Viking, was a fumble.

Adrian has been great to watch, and he is a big reason I'm the fan I am today.

However, I really hope they just move on. Don't even attempt a renegotiation, just wish him the best and move on.

I believe they should and likely can find their RBotF in the draft and shouldn't really mess with the free agent class.

Cut AP.

Draft 3rd or 4th round rookie and sign Eddie Lacy or Doug Martin (assuming he's released) to a "prove it" deal.

Let Asiata and McKinnon fight it out for the remaining roster spot. Neither has shown enough to be considered a large part of next season's plans. Neither of them should be #2 on the depth chart next year (and certainly not #1).

However, it won't matter what they do if they don't get a minimum of two new (competent) starters on the Offensive Line.

I voted draft the starter

Let AP go after he inevitably refuses a paycut down to a reasonable number. Keep Asiata as a pass blocker/RB3/special teamed.

Ideally, IMO, we draft a RB with our later 3rd or earlier 4th after selecting a G (Lamp, Isidora, Pocic, Elflein, Q. Nelson) and a OT (Gennessy, Dawkins, Johnson) with our first two picks.

Then, looking at RBs, I'd keep an eye on:
-Foreman (probably goes earlier than this)
-Kamara
-Jamaal Williams
-Kareem Hunt
-Perine
-Mixon (serious character concerns)

This is an interesting topic . . . let me put it this way, IMO --- Fix the O-line!

All of those FA to-be RBs are not the caliber of what's on the Vikes roster, except maybe Asiata and Line, who I agree could be upgraded.

McKinnon was drafted in the mold of LT, a pass-catching change of pace for the monster workhorse in front of him. That said, re-signing Adrian gives the Vikes the best chance at regaining the rush game we're used --- but only if the O-line stands up and grows five pairs together.

If the Vikes are to draft a RB, let it be a guy that can move a house like Adrian, but not fumble . . . heck look at Detroit's RBs this year, one fumble amongst the whole crew, and that was my man Zenner.

As much as I want to see Adrian return, it may not happen and if that's the case, the Vikes may have to replace 2-4 RBs . . . that's bad turnover. Can't let that happen, as it's always best to grow from in-house.

I'd cut Peterson to start.

I'd then pursue a veteran RB, someone who can give the team 16+ carries when asked an average 4 yards per carry. Would be nice if this player could pass block as well. Perhaps Jonathan Stewart, Alfred Morris or Ryan Mathews if released. There isn't a back on the roster that can pass protect or carry the load assuming Asiata and Peterson don't return.

I'd also use a third rd pick on what will hopefully be our RB of the future.

Jerick McKinnon and C.J. Ham will compete for the final spot, preference will be up to coaches if they prefer a gadget player or between the tackles thumper. McKinnon is safe, but playing time could diminish if the rookie catches on early. I'd love to find our own David Johnson in round 3.

Of course. Bigger point being that I don't want to see the Vikes throw high picks at a RB at the expense of improving the OL or DL.
