For the Wizards' fans here, I present

Good news: if the track record holds, the Wizards will likely be in the playoffs this year. In fact, excluding the Bulls collapse last year (due to injuries to Noah and Butler), no team 5th or better on Jan 20 has missed the playoffs in April (though the 2007 Magic and 2009 Pistons came close, finishing as 8th seeds).

Bad news: Based on where they ranked on January 20th
1. No Jan 20th 5th seed has won the Championship (out of ten teams, 0%)
2. Only one Jan 20th 5th seed ever appeared in the Finals: 2015 Cavaliers (out of 20 teams, 5%).
3. Only three teams that were Jan 20th 5th or worse made the conference championships (out of 40 teams, 7.5%): 2008 Spurs, 2010 Suns (6th seed) and the aforementioned 2015 Cavs.

So, expect a first or second round playoff loss. Oh, in case you are curious, the Jan 20 5th Eastern Conference seed finished:
1st = 0 times
2nd = 1
3rd = 1
4th = 2
5th = 3
6th = 1
7th = 0
8th = 2
out = 0

If you include the West, it is
1st = 0 times
2nd = 1
3rd = 2
4th = 3
5th = 3
6th = 4
7th = 4
8th = 2
out = 1 (2011 Jazz = 11th)

So, don't be too alarmed if they slip a little or be too happy if they shoot up. They're still likely to bomb out before the Conference Finals.

Just a follow-up

The one interesting team would have been the Heat, who came just one game short of making the playoffs after starting 11-30. They had the best second season of any team who was below 0.500 to make it to 0.500 down the stretch (30-11).

The Heat swept the Wizards also, of course one of those games was when the Wizards were missing Mahinmi and they started off worse than the Heat in the beginning of the season. Then, two of the loses were when the Wizards were resting players the final two times they played them right before the playoffs.

I think the Wizards have a chance to go to the eastern conference finals. With the Bulls now more healthy - and Wade rested and ready for the playoffs - they seriously pose a threat to the Celtics who have Isaiah Thomas as a tremendous scorer and no one else and he might be the worst defensive player in the league.

Getting the 4th seed and having the Cavs slip to #2 was a complete luck of the draw for the Wizards. Let's also not forget that the Wizards were very close to being in the Eastern Conf finals in 2013 & 14, they had some bad breaks in each 2nd round series - pun intended.

Beal just hit a daggerrrr to put the Wiz up 8 with 30 seconds left! Cool

18-7 run the last 5 minutes for the Wizards.

32 for Wall & 31 for Beal Cool

To borrow from WJFK, this is my "Winning Off the Field" for today:

My wife wanted to schedule a date night, with the idea that we would go to a pub trivia quiz on Wednesday. Unfortunately, the babysitter could only make it for Thursday (i.e today). So, my wife went and scheduled our date night. Now, some of you who aren't married might say "well, then rescheduled."

You are obviously not married. And you certainly don't have kids.

So, yesterday, my wife had a run-in with another mother who runs our Girl Scout troop, and it wasn't happy. Long story short, my wife was feeling kind of crappy today and calls me and asks if we can skip going out tonight. I say sure, but before I can ask if I can watch the draft, she says "why don't we just have a stay-in date?" Obviously, I say that's fine (thinking that maybe I can finagle a pick here or there).

A bit before I am about to come home, my wife calls and tells me that she got a call from her handbell choir that she helps out with. She tells me they're short-handed and if I would be okay if she goes to play with them. She wants to still meet up and "date" afterwards, but she'd like to do this in part to do something mentally cleansing after the run-in.

Of course, I say okay.

So, by being a good and understanding husband, I get to watch the draft and a happy wife.

And that, folks, is "winning off the field."

https://www.yahoo.com/sports/news/olympic-sprinter-obliterates-john-rosss-40-time-bolt-challenge-111704955.html

The Cincinnati Bengals snagged receiver John Ross in the first round in large part because of speed; Ross set a combine record by ripping through the 40-yard dash in 4.22 seconds. Flush with the glory of his new job, Ross declared he could beat Olympic champion Usain Bolt in the 40-yard dash, and even challenged him to a race.

We havenít yet heard from Bolt, but another Olympian, Christian Coleman of the United States, decided to take up Ross on his challenge. Coleman, a sprinter for the University of Tennessee who was part of the United Statesí 4◊100 relay team in Rio, lined up on the field at UTís indoor practice facility and, well:

That would be a 4.12 time that Coleman posted, one-tenth of a second faster than Ross. That equates to roughly a yard of distance between them. There isnít a 40-yard competition in the NCAA, but there is a 60-yard sprint, and Coleman recently won gold in that event at the 2017 Indoor National Track & Field Championships.

Granted, speed is only one component of a football game; itís pretty much a certainty that Ross has better hands than either Coleman or Bolt. Still, this was useful for a bit of perspective. The fastest guy in the NFL isnít anywhere close to Olympic level.

That's amazing. Just goes to show you how fast those track sprinters really are. Wow! Cool

Coleman should enter the 2018 NFL draft if he can, just so he can go to the combine and set the combine 40 yard dash record!

Watching the Wizards is like watching the Capitals in the playoffs, it's so frustrating how poor they can play on defense at times and how they can't get defensive rebounds which leads to second chance points. Porter hasn't played well since February. I don't even think he should start. Oubre should start and Bogdonavich hasn't played well since the first few weeks we got him, which was in March I think.

Beal has been horrible this game. He was 4-10, and 1-8 from 3 going into the 4th quarter.

If they're going to win, Beal had to score at least 10 points the 4th quarter and now overtime. He has to get hot.

Beal has just blew it this game man. He's missed so many make-able shots, he should have made that last shot and the game should have be over in regulation.

Beal and Wall both had airballs in the 4th quarter, one of them had two airballs in the game, I think it was Wall.

Beal & Wall combined a 4-19 on 3's (Wall 3-10, Beal 1-9) Bogdanovic was 0-2 from 3. Porter 1-4 from 3.

Beal was 4-15 overall for the game and had 6 turnovers in the game and they were really bad turnovers.

They were 10/34 on 3's for the game. You can't win and shoot that bad from 3.

@NeilDala96 In the final 5:32, the #Wizards were 2 of 11 from the field. Both of those makes were from Kelly Oubre.

Same old Wizards on the road in the playoffs! Blew a winnable game once again, so disappointing this team is! Twisted Evil

It also doesn't help things when the ref decided you aren't even allowed to look at Isiah Thomas.

Definitely true. They showed flashes in the 1st quarter each of the games @ Boston of what they can do. They just need to be a bit more consistent - particularly in the middle of the game - and to get a few more calls. I'm hopeful they get the two at home like they did vs Atl and come back to Boston tied 2-2. They certainly are capable, if Beal had just had only an average game and Bogdanovic hits a few shots, they win. I think Beal will rebound and have great games at home, if he doesn't, they'll be swept.

One thing is for sure, in free agency they must get two more wings that can defend. It remains to be seen if Porter and Bogdanovic will be retained. If it were me, I'd let them both walk, go with Oubre as our starting SF and sign a new back up SG & new back up SF who can not only hit a 3, but also play some defense.

Wizards update walking wounded with Markieff Morris, Otto Porter, Ian Mahinmi

http://www.csnmidatlantic.com/washington-wizards/wizards-update-walking-wounded-markieff-morris-otto-porter-ian-mahinmi‬

Quote:
Brooks said this about Mahinmi today:

"Ian, still day-to-day. He's progressing in the right direction but not ready to be on the court to play at the level we need him to play at. He's definitely improving. Probably won't play tomorrow night."Mahinmi has missed nine consecutive games, dating to the regular-season finale for the Wizards.

Man, we need him bad. What a disappointment this season has been for him. When he was playing the second half of the year he played well and outplayed Gortat, especially on defense but man we need this guy to stay healthy! Without him we are a small and soft vs the Celtics when Gortat and Morris go out of the game.

Just another one of Ernie's awful moves that he's made during his lifetime contract. Burke, Nicholson, Bogs, Jennings etc. have all been completely horrible moves. The sad thing is I knew Ernie was going to deal away our first rounder but he could've got something much better than Bogs for it. It's remarkable how much of a dolt Ted Leonsis is I just pray he fires Ernie before he allows him to waste away Walls potential like he did Ovi.
