I have never seen DT show that much emotion as he just did on that first down reception.

So much for Paxton seeing snaps.

I think Kubiak wants to give the Raiders a beat down.

24-6 with 4:30 left. So much for 50/50.

Well final in game thoughts:

1. DL was better with Peko as NT. Probably a part of having no tape and also fresh legs. But get another NT to start Peko could be a decent backup / rotation guy. Definitely don't want him to start based off 1 game but good signs at least. Gostis recovered a fumble! Ok not a play on his own but at least he has film we can dissect.

2. Booker once again built on his gains last week. This was the guy we saw week 1-8. If CJ is ok we are in good shape next year with our run game if we get the OL working.

3. OL - better but not enough to think we stand pat at LG / either T. Get it done Elway!

4. Siemian - a nice bounce back game.

5. Play calling - bubble screen, deep shots, rb usage early. Wish we had seen more of this early game calling in November / December.

We lost 2-3 spots in draft position with the win but given it was Kubiak's last game I can't be too upset...at least until May lol. Nice way to go out! Overall the guys we will count on most to take a step forward in big roles next year gave room for optimism.

I truly think trevor got the whOle game today for a reason. Truthfully I can totally see a team with two high picks like Cleveland or a team like Jacksonville. Trade back with Denver for Siemian. this way denver gets a blue chip tackle and the team gets a cheap smart qb option.

I missed that on first viewing, but just caught up there too. He's still raw as hell, but at least he showed up today. Our D still gave up chunk running plays at times, but Peko/Gostis/Wolfe worked a lot better than Sly/Crick/Wolfe did the last 2-3 games. One game is hardly enough to say Peko and Gostis will progress to push for starters or rotational snaps, but it was an encouraging sign. Will love to see how Gostis fares in OTA's and early preseason with a full offseason to refine his techniques. Even if we make a splash DE signing and re-up Vance Walker, getting a 4th DE to round out the rotation with our home games in altitude and injury risk (losing Walker really bit us hard this year), it's would be a huge bonus.

Upon re-watching - besides the pick, Simmons also showed up well in the game today - nice contested play on the failed 2-pt convert, and better angles in run support than last week, where he really struggled. Given he's been coming on since the 2H of the season, it's going to be a really interesting discussion if we need the $ to get another splash guy, what we do with Ward. Ward's still incredibly useful especially as a run enforcer, but his pass game deficiencies are a sign of decline with his skillset that usually herald a big slide. I wouldn't cut him just for the $ saving (4.5M), as depth matters - but Simmons' progress as a rookie the last 6 games is really noteworthy, and if we're put in a position where we have to trim extra fat to get another key playmaker in FA, well, there aren't a lot of spots left with that kind of savings, and with guys on our roster who actually look like decent shots to take over soon. Along with Booker, Simmons is the 2nd year guy most likely to take a step forward play-wise at this stage.

I'm telling you, Ward is not going anywhere and I too have been so impressed by Simmons and Parks down the stretch. If you want to risk total mutiny in the defensive locker room, I guess cut TJ. He and Talib are the top dogs in that locker room from all accounts, his teammates voted him captain and he's really not too expensive for another year. There are a TON of avenues this team can explore to save money here and there. Most a hell of a lot more realistic and team-friendly.

If anything, Simmons' emergence should put TJ in more favorable positions to play to his strengths next season. In Simmons you have a pretty dynamic athlete who can cover serious ground and theoretically match up well against tight ends, and we all know Stewart excels wherever you put him. Which means T.J. is a chess piece who can line up anywhere you want without needing to play in space as much anymore. TJ will still bring value to this defense next year, and now we know we have a safety who excels in areas he's weakest. That's exciting.

There are going to be guys that can be cut for sure if we need to make more room - Virgil Green 2.8M, Cody Latimer 925k, Ty Sambrailo 550k, Billy Turner 795k, Marlon Brown 775k. Most of us already assume Okung and his 11.5M is gone.

Even with the above cuts, though, that gives us approx. 53M of cap room (now the added 6.7M of unused 2016 cap gets added, nice). So no need to cut Ward for $ alone....unless we need to spend $57M and those other options are exhausted. And before people say "how can you spend 50M+ in an offseason" - the cap is up by 15M+ across the board - which means if you want difference makers, you don't pay 2016 rates - you increase the rates substantially. One look at the first contract paid out to Michael Bennett should give a hint of what we'll see if you want difference-makers.

Again, the most likely scenario is Ward stays...but after all those guys above, he's the only guy with a significant cap savings for which we have a reasonable alternative to. If Elway can fill all our gaps within the budget, then Ward stays, no need to cut him. Just beware of the mindset that we have more than enough $ to fill our FA wish list, given the new reality of the post-cap increase salaries we're likely to see.

Another way to scrape out a couple million I looked at: "Extend" Talib. New four year contract running through 2020. He has no guaranteed money left on his deal so a good chunk of cash up front could entice him to take a fairly team-friendly deal. Lower that 2017 that cap hit from 12 to 10 or 10.5. 2019 and 2020 would basically just be filler, team options we wouldn't likely exercise on a 33 year old corner.
