Watched his highlights yday. I see why they play Draughn more now. Mike's not as much of a change of pace back to Hyde as Shaun is. Don't think Davis was beat at all now, just a matter of circumstance/role for the 49ers.

If by change of pace, you mean that Hyde can produce some, and Draughn is good at not making out of the backfield, then yes, Draughn is a pretty good change of pace. The thing with Draughn is that given carries, he will eventually have a great series, where he breaks a decent run or two, then add a catch for a good chunk. But as a back-up, he doesn't get to get into rhythm and is not very productive. Draughn didn't do much last year until Hyde got injured and he became a starter. As a starter, he still wasn't blowing anyone away. But as a back-up, yes he brings a different style, but he brings very little effectiveness.

Mike Davis might not be the ideal back-up either. If you want change of pace, I'd give Dujuan Harris a chance. Last year, he actually was productive as a back-up, while Draughn was starting.

Let's see what Davis can do now that Hyde is likely out.

Is there a reason to believe he will get an even number or possibly more snaps than Draughn?

They've already announced he's starting over Draughn, though the distribution of snaps could be debated. He could very well start and get only 30% of snaps compared to Draughns 70%. no way to know until the game is here.

That being said, it's not a good game for Davis or Draughn to try and impress anyway. TB has typically had a good run defense and struggled in the secondary the last few years. Our interior run blocking is pretty bad to make matters worse. We will continually try to run the ball, I have no doubt, but if we do any damage, I have to imagine it's coming through the air. I doubt either of the running backs do any major damage running the football (though Kaep is always capable of handling that on his own)

Harris is just better with the ball in his hand. He's better than every back on our roster with the ball in his hand with the exception of Hyde. He fumbles too much. Not sure if that is the main reason he struggled to get on the roster - he looked better than Draughn and Davis last year, and he looked it again on Sunday. I think he's just a better runner with the ball in his hand.

On a positive note, having got 21 yards on 7 carries Davis finally averaged 3 yards per carry for game and has now moved his season average above 2, which is a nice accomplishment for him since his career average is still below 2.

He's looking like a bust, but get him some more carries and the average will go up. With Hyde's injury history, it might make sense for the 49ers to use a committee approach like their cross-town rivals do. 15-8-8 among Hyde, Harris, and Davis respectively would be fine, but then again, they got Kaep too.

I'm sure the Packers could use Mike Davis right about now, lol.

I don't know why we would even give those 8 to Davis. I'd just split them more evenly between Hyde and Harris

Fumbles too much. Has a great run then coughs it up on the next play. I'm good on this dude until he can hold onto the ball.

Sounds a lot like another guy in his draft class, Matt Jones.

However, I think Mike Davis had 2 hand surgeries on his dominant hand in 2 seasons as a pro. I could be wrong, but I'd like to think that has something to do with it.
