The current stadium was opened in 1973 and was originally known as Rich Stadium (local company Rich Products). The name changed to Ralph Wilson Stadium in 1998. Now New Era has purchased the naming rights. _________________

It's awesome that it's been sold to a Buffalo company. I'm glad they sold the naming rights, it was leaving free money on the table and as a small market team we can use every penny. _________________

And I'm sure the new stadium will be New Era Ralph Wilson stadium. Like, they wouldn't just remove the name recognition from the stadium. Just like Candlestick became X sponsor at Candlestick Park. _________________

Well, maybe not... they apparently removed Ralph Wilson's name already on the Stadium itself (perhaps they are going to readd it smaller/somewhere else though)

LIS I think it's just going to be Ralph Wilson New Era stadium or something to that effect.
I'm sure it'll change but keeping the branding of "The Ralph" makes sense from both a brand image and a fanbase perspective. _________________

I'm curious... I'm not a Bills fan so I wouldn't know this, but why is it you think fans will cling to the Ralph name when from what I understand, almost no one has clinged to the stadiums' original name, Rich Stadium? Or is there still Bills fans who still refer to it as Rich Stadium?
The stadium has only been Ralph Wilson stadium for 17 years; it was called Rich Stadium for a quarter of a century. I understand Ralph Wilson's contribution to the league and being the founder of the Bills, but I remember when Rich Products lost the naming rights it sounded extremely weird to me for quite awhile hearing people call it the Ralph Wilson Stadium.
Not trying to be antagonistic - I'm genuinely curious. I recall as a Dolphins fan it took me a long while to refer to our stadium as anything other than Pro Player Stadium. _________________ With much cheese,

I think the only reason anyone is making a big deal out of it (which I haven't really seen) is that it's because he just recently passed away and that he had a huge role in keeping the Bills in Buffalo even after his death. I have no problem with it though, it's not like his name isn't already on the inside of the stadium in gold on the wall of fame. Plus, like he said, I think this generation will continue to call it The Ralph just out of habit. _________________

It seems the official new name is New Era Field. _________________ With much cheese,

My dad's generation will always call it Rich stadium, to me it'll always be the Ralph and my kids and this new generation (or should I say this new era ) it'll be The Lid. _________________

Glad it is to a Buffalo company. We were basically throwing money away by turning down naming rights offers, so it had to happen eventually. Happy with the way it turned out. I prefer "New Era Stadium" to "New Era Field" but hey, I'm not the one spending millions to name the stadium, so that's fine. |
