Techbert came up with a really interesting idea so I'm going to give it a try. I'm going to do a few things differently than Bert so I'll have a few advantages his team didn't but I am going to try to mirror RL. I'm going to run an Expansion Draft using players mainly from this thread:
http://www.footballsfuture.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=573791

But I'm also going to try and logically assess whether the players recommended by the fans would actually be made available. I'll mainly be focusing on players that have been cut or are rumored to be cut.

After the Expansion Draft, I'll make FA offers. With this being an Expansion team, I recognize that players are unlikely to sign here unless we overpay so I'll compare my offers to the real free agent contracts signed and give my team certain players that we paid a premium for.

I'm going to be paying attention to the salary cap so I'll be keeping track of the contracts I give out. The good news is that we already have a team song:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSpg5Mf-km4

First things first, we need to hire a coaching staff. Introducing the San Antonio Gunslingers Coaching Staff...

Head Coach: Mike Smith

Offensive Coordinator: John DeFilippo

Defensive Coordinator: Mike Nolan

Keeping in mind the fact that this is an expansion team, top head coaching candidates are going to steer clear. Mike Smith is a steady coach that knows how to develop players and coach a fundamentally sound team. He may not be the best candidate out there but he brings credibility, experience, and connections to put together a competent staff.

I'm a big fan of the work John DeFilippo did in Cleveland. I wanted him as the Rams OC this year. Guy has no business being demoted to QB Coach.

Mike Nolan has a long track record in the NFL of success. He's not an elite defensive mind but he has shown the ability to work with both 3-4 and 4-3 defenses and have success. He's a good teacher, an experienced defensive mind, and worked with Mike Smith in Atlanta.

Smith, DeFilippo, and Nolan are responsible for filling out the rest of the staff.

The next step in the process will be the expansion draft. That will be in my next post.

I will model my Expansion Draft after the 2002 Expansion Draft.

The Gunslingers must either pick 30 players or pick enough players so that their combined cap hit in 2016 is 38% of the salary cap ($59.0 million).

When I draft the player, I acquire everything remaining on his contract including prorated signing bonus. Here are my selections:
Round 1 - Ryan Clady LT Denver Broncos ($10,100,000 cap hit)
Round 2 - Rahim Moore S Houston Texas ($4,068,750 cap hit)
Round 3 - DeMarco Murray HB Philadelphia Eagles ($8,000,000 cap hit)
Round 4 - Jahri Evans OG New Orleans Saints ($8,200,000 cap hit)
Round 5 - John Sullivan C Minnesota Vikings ($5,833,333 cap hit)
Round 6 - Brent Grimes CB Miami Dolphins ($9,500,000 cap hit)
Round 7 - Zane Beadles OG Jacksonville Jaguars ($5,500,000 cap hit)
Round 8 - Mario Williams DE Buffalo Bills ($19,900,000 cap hit)
Round 9 - Daryl Smith ILB Baltimore Ravens ($4,375,000 cap hit)

I actually decided to go quite a bit over the required amount of $59 million. Mario's contract took me from about $52 million to about $72 million and Daryl Smith took me to around $76.5 million.

As you can see, I prioritized getting an OL. And then I wanted to get a few key pieces for the defense.

Free Agency will be next. I'll make a list of offers.

I'm for starting an expansion team as long as it takes DeMarco Murray's whinny, overpaid, Dallas loving, 2 YPC butt out of Philly!

Rahim Moore? Might as well play with ten men and save the cash.

Here's my initial list of free agent offers, there will likely be offers added as players are cut so some of these are subject to change:
Terrance Knighton DT Washington Redskins - 2 years $11 million
Tyrunn Walker DT Detroit Lions - 2 years $7 million
Cedric Thornton DT Philadelphia Eagles - 3 years $12 million
Derrick Shelby DE Miami Dolphins - 4 years $20 million
Jerraud Powers CB Arizona Cardinals - 3 years $18 million
Sterling Moore CB Tampa Bay Buccaneers - 3 years $7.5 million
William Moore S Atlanta Falcons - 3 years $15 million
Chase Daniel QB Kansas City Chiefs - 3 years $18 million
Rishard Matthews WR Miami Dolphins - 4 years $22 million
Nate Washington WR Houston Texas - 1 year $1 million
Rod Streater WR Oakland Raiders - 1 year $1.5 million
Robert Turbin HB Dallas Cowboys - 1 year $1 million
Tony Bergstrom C/OG/OT Oakland Raiders - 3 years $6 million
Dwayne Allen TE Indianapolis Colts - 4 years $26 million
Rhett Ellison TE Minnesota Vikings - 2 years $4 million

I'd also add another 15 or so depth players at the NFL minimum.

Moore makes some bonehead plays but I think he's a good fit in Smith's C-2.

Haha, yea. I need a HB willing to eat a lot of carries in 2016 to protect my QBs. DeMarco will get what he desires.

Gotta wait until the draft for that. Going to do it during the draft (if I can) so I won't have the benefit of hindsight and will get to make accurate picks.

That's a great idea. You'll know exactly who is there and like you said without hindsight you won't know who will be available at your next pick.

Rock on.

Waiting for the draft is the 2nd-most nerve-wracking part of this. (The most being watching your pick slide and slide....)

Not my idea haha. Was Techbert's idea.

Yep. Now, I gotta wait for FA to start to see how I did with my offers.

Don't feel you have to live or die on your initial offers. Pick one guy you are going to bring in and hammer, until a deal is made.

There are a few guys I'm willing to bump it up on. We'll see. Trying not to overspend this off-season when I'm just filling out my team. But also don't want to stick my coaches with a completely talentless roster.

If your "signed" free agent(s) got more money with other team(s) in real life, you would lose him/them? Or they are yours, end of story?
