I still think we should draft a CB at some point this year but Newman should be good depth. I prefer at this point he doesn't start and just takes a limited role.
sort of like Antoine Winfield late in his career, although they have different playing styles I think. _________________

With Newman on the roster, and assuming Sherels keeps his spot due to punt return and special teams duties, that only leaves room for 1 other CB (I can't see us keeping 7 corners on the roster).
Drafting a CB would mean cutting Jabari Price. I don't necessarily have a problem with that, but it is something to consider. _________________

I wouldn't draft a CB at the expense of an O-lineman. I think we need as many scratch-offs there as possible. _________________

But we can't ignore the position either. We need a #5, with Sherels being the last resort. I'm not holding my breath on Price being that guy. _________________

You can sign a competent #5 off the street. If you're down to #5, you're in trouble anyway. _________________

Newman entertained offers from three other teams, with the most interest being shown by the Raiders, but when the Vikings stepped up with an offer, he was more than happy to come back because he wants to win a title and had to ask himself if he thought his chances were greater in Minnesota or perhaps somewhere else – one of several factors that played into his decision to come back to the Vikings. There wasn’t any doubt in Newman’s mind that he was coming back. He and head coach Mike Zimmer talked about a potential contract around the time of the Scouting Combine, but he had made up his mind on Jan. 1 – the date of the Vikings final game, that he wanted to play in 2017.
Newman: “The important part is physically and mentally I felt great, but being that my contract ran out, you have to have a place to play. Obviously for me, it was situational where, if a team calls, is it a better situation than where I’m at now? I didn’t not want to play, I’ll make that clear. I definitely wanted to play, but obviously I didn’t want to play just to play. I wanted to play with a chance to win a ring. They could have talked to me right after the season and I would have say, ‘Hey, I’m on board. Let’s do this.’”

Zimmer: “Terence is an unbelievable kid. He’s extremely hard-working. He takes good care of his body. I’ve told him all along that he’s going to coach for me whenever he’s done playing, whenever that is. Hopefully he has another great year this year. And I thought he played well, since he came in here he has played well, and you know, he’s a good leader and a good voice in the locker room.”

Newman: "For me, I’ve always had an insatiable quest for knowledge. I love learning. I sit at home and just Google random stuff watching TV because I want to know about things. I approach the game in that manner. I watch film. I’ll study my opponent and their schemes, and I want to know exactly what’s going to go on. Every team gives you something. You just have to prepare for it and understand when and where. Everybody window-dresses everything they do. One week they’ll motion a guy over and the next week they’ll do it the opposite way but you get to the same formation. But it’s recognizing those formations. I’m so attentive. That’s one thing I love to do. I just love to watch film and study guys."
"I want to work [after retiring from football]. I want to do something that I love. Maybe I’ll stay in the game one way or another. I don’t know about coaching. Maybe I’ll be a scout or something, where I don’t have to deal with players because there are some players that I would … you remember Latrell Sprewell and P.J. Carlesimo? There might be a story like that but the reverse, where the coach chokes the player. But I think I’d have to do some scouting stuff. I have a different feeling than how the millennials are. A lot of guys rely strictly on their talent. They don’t put everything together. They don’t do the film work."

I bash millennials all the time...quite a few of them live up to the stereotypes. And as a Gen Xer, we can now say to our parents and grandparents...see, we're not the laziest ones...we've actually got the best of both worlds. We know what it was like pre-internet...when you actually had to talk to people. _________________

Newman: “My body feels awesome right now. I actually feel better this offseason than I did last offseason at this point. That’s super crazy, because I did all the same things this year as I did last year. I’ve played both sides at cornerback, safety and nickel since I’ve been here, so I’m comfortable wherever they put me. I don’t care what my role is as long as I have a role. I’m grateful that I’m still playing at this age. I’ve been blessed.”

Awesome that he came back, and that he is feeling good despite being so old, relatively. There still is a very clear path for Wayne's and Alexander to take over starting roles, but if either falters, we know that Newman can step in and perform well, along with spelling them during games or filling in for an injury. Not to mention, he has the ability to play safety if that is a need. Great piece to have as a veteran leader on this defense. _________________
