The Minnesota Vikings are considering a move to the south and west.

Lester Bagley: “We’re currently evaluating the long-term viability of Winter Park as a practice facility and team headquarters.”

He declined to discuss the team’s options, but it’s well-known that the organization has outgrown its home and now runs its business out of three separate office buildings. The marketing staff is in downtown Minneapolis at 1010 Metrodome Square, across S. 5th Street from the new stadium construction site. The team also has office space at Winter Park and in a neighboring office building.

Since buying the team a decade ago, Zygi and Mark Wilf have put several million dollars into piecemeal upgrades such as locker room improvements and a television studio, but the time has come, apparently, for a bigger move.

It’s unclear what sort of timeline the team has set for a decision, but one developer said the Vikings have spoken to him about land to the southwest on Hwy. 212 in Chanhassen, less than 10 minutes from Winter Park. The upscale west-metro suburb has been growing steadily and is ripe for more amenities, including shopping and theaters.

Whether they stay in in EP or move to Chanhassen or Shakopee it is only about a 10 minute move. No big deal.

I wonder if they would keep training camp in-house if they built a fancy new facility?

I'd hope they see it as a fan engagement opportunity and continue holding training camp off-site, even if not at Mankato.

It's funny, I was just looking at Winter Park a few weeks ago and thinking it might be time to move to a new location to allow for expansion.

A lot of going away to camp is the team-building aspect of it. It gets guys out of their own homes, away from distractions, and into a team-controlled environment.

Since most players live out that way, when they are here, it makes sense for practice facilities to be out there, and not downtown.

Eden Prairie and Chanhassen both curious about the Vikings' development intentions:

Anything's possible, but it probably wouldn't happen soon, despite this being the last year of their current contract with Mankato. I'd suspect that they would sign another 2 or 3-year extension, just so Mankato can celebrate their 150th year as a university and still have the training camp.

I live down the street from the Broncos' facility, and it goes without saying that their facility is far superior to Winter Park. WP been a good home for decades, but it is time to move on.

This would be a great location. It's just off the intersection of 494 and 35E, and only about 7 miles from MSP. It's actually 3 miles closer to the stadium than the Eden Prairie site too.

Vikings Chief Operating Officer Kevin Warren: “As we have previously discussed, the existing Winter Park training facility poses space and flexibility challenges for the Vikings as we continue to grow and evolve. While we are evaluating a variety of options to accommodate the long-term needs of our football team and the organization at-large, this [Egan] property is intriguing for several reasons. Not only does this location have tremendous space and flexibility for future growth, but it also offers proximity to both Minneapolis and St. Paul downtowns, as well as the airport. With this agreement in place, we now have an opportunity to perform a thorough evaluation of the site. We continue to appreciate our strong relationship with the community of Eden Prairie and the positive environment the city’s leadership has created over the past 30-plus years.”
