I apologize if this has been hit on, as I may have missed it, but what do you guys think of lack of reps (ZERO if I'm not mistaken) Sankey has gotten with the 1st team during the preseason?

I know it has been touched on briefly in preseason GDT's, but now with just a little over a week before the season starts, I find myself a bit perplexed as to why we gave Leon Washington more 1st team reps than the 1st running-back taken in the draft this year. I really like Sankey and the potential that he possesses, but it's been a bit of a bummer to only see him get any meaningful PT with the 2's/3's (given that it is PRESEASON afterall).

Thoughts?

I'd like to think it's so it will catch Kansas City off guard when he gets 15 carries in Week 1. In all honesty, I don't get it. Shonn Greene can't catch the ball, isn't a great blocker and is just so slow through the hole.

Exactly. I failed to mention that in the first post. I am okay with Greene between the tackles for the most part, but his pass blocking was horrid against ATL.

I too share your optimism in that hopefully we are just hiding him for the regular season, but for him to have 0 reps in exhibition games just seems silly to me.

Because he's so good the coaches know they don't even have to waste "tape" on him. Wink

I think, and read that the coaching staff is wanting to see him complete different obstacles, I think this last game he was supposed to work on like grabbing the ball in and at the right spot. They said that each time they have him do something, he does. I think they don't want to throw him into the fire pit when they dont have to. But, I do think he'll be the main back before long, he just has so much more than the other RB's.

Plus lets not forget, he is a rookie and is a ways behind the other guys since he had to finish school.

Local radio for some reson, thinks that Greene has looked good during the pre-season. I disagree. His slowness shows. He has 3-4 yard gains where I feel another back could have had 8-9 yards.

Also his blitz pickup seems to have regressed and wasn't really effective agains the Falcons.

Maybe Sankey isn't doing all he should yet, maybe they want to surprise people, but I do find it odd he hasn't been with the starting line at all.

I don't mind Greene getting carries over Sankey at this point but when Washington who should be nothing more than a returner at this point get snaps over Sankey, that's a problem.

Mariani looked better than Leon Washington and Wooten as returner. They haven't used McCluster yet, or did I miss it? I think it's the pass protection they are worried about. If it wasn't, I'd keep Sankey and Andrews and let others walk. McCluster tries hard, but he just is not big enough to be an NFL RB. Maybe they could keep Washington to be the Danny Woodhead type.

It's hard for me to envision Greene staying healthy for the entire season so I don't see any way Sankey doesn't start at some point this season.

McCluster was brought in to play the Danny Woodhead type role. Washington is nothing more than a return specialist.

Would rather have Washington or Mariani returning kicks, but have McCluster return punts.

I wish we would jut cut Greene. IMO he doesn't belong on this team. We have better more capable RB's on the roster.

I think they're still working on certain fundamentals with Sankey before they put him into the real think of things. And I think he's still getting acclimated to the speed of the game (but that's just my opinion).

I still say we should give Colin Mooney some reps at RB in case Greene starts having health issues or whatever. He could really add value over Greene with his versatility as a FB, RB and ST player.

Actually we don't. Who on the roster is more than capable? Sankey is a rookie, McCluster is gadget player, Washington is a return specialist, etc. I'm not the biggest Greene fan either but to say he doesn't belong and there's more capable players on the team is a joke. Greene still provides value as a power back. I know some will say Battle can be that but there's a reason Battle has been a career journeyman...

I guess we will have to agree to disagree because I would say that both Sankey and McCluster are better than Greene. Plus Greene is injury riddled and is just a hit away from gone again.

I agree. Greene reminds me of Lenwhale way too much. Great vision but to slow to get through the hole. Weight problems. He is better than White but is also more injury prone.

With our Oline Greene will see some success but will also cost us some big plays and kill drives. I know hes locked in this year but I hope Sankey takes the job and we cut him next year.

Also if Greene is as bad as he was last Sat in pass pro Locker may not make it to week 6.
