There seems to be a lot of worrying about this team, and while the general 'it's preseason' argument doesn't seem to be really working to keep people's fears at bay, maybe revisiting the first year of the Harbaugh era - the one that most closely resembles this one - will help. That offseason, there was a tremendous amount of change, but a solid incoming rookie class and terrific coaching helped the team gel.

...But not in the preseason.

QBs:

Alex Smith - 20 of 36 for 198 yards, 0 TDs, 2 INTs, 48.1 QBR
Colin Kaepernick - 24 of 50 for 257 yards, 0 TDs, 5 INTs, 23.9 QBR

Alex would go on to have a good season, and in his limited time in the Buccs game, Kaepernick was perfect with a TD pass. But there were certainly no indications of that in preseason. The QBs and the offense as a whole were terrible. Completely and utterly.

HBs:

Halfbacks weren't much of a problem. Gore had his typical 3-carry preseason, and a young dynamic runner in Kendall Hunter lit up the preseason giving the fans at least some hint of solid play.

OL:

Anyone want to try and remember the Saints game that preseason? The offensive line was a turnstile. It was a punishing game, and it caused epic concern that would go on to be unwarranted. The team pulled it together, and the offensive line became a strength.

DBs:

Skipping over the other units, our DBs were 'no-hands' Carlos Rogers, old backup starting for his first season Tarrell Brown, Dynamic young FS in DaShon Goldson, and FA pick-up Donte Whitner. This was essentially a brand new secondary, and in the preseason - they showed nothing that indicated they knew how to stop anyone.

Against the two good teams on the preseason schedule, the 49ers were outscored 54-10. They looked like a disaster, the offense couldn't move, the defense couldn't stop anyone, and what happened in the regular season?

They started gameplanning. They actually prepared for their opponent and had only used the preseason to stay vanilla and check out individual performances. The team went 13-3, the quarterback play was solid, the offensive line was a strength, the defensive backfield played extremely well together, and an NFC Championship game appearance was on the way.

In other words - chill out. This is a notoriously poor preseason team playing with a lot of missing pieces that won't be missing in the first game.

(Of course, in 2011 - we did lose to the Cowboys, so there is that).

You just had to toss that out there huh... I was at that game..sigh... This team always for some unknown Harbaugh reason stink in the Preseason. I have to believe it's intentional. They show nothing on either end it's vanilla all the way around.

The blitz controversy. I seem to remember even Sean Payton and Drew Brees got sacks in that game.

I tend to agree with the vanilla stuff too. You can tell nobody is really truly concerned with the preseason crap on this team. I hope you're right.

I remember that Saints game (and the reaction on here by all of us) so vividly.. seemed like we were completely screwed and BOOM, one of the best olines in the league.

I don't remember, but how good was the Saints pass rush in that year's playoff game? Maybe Payton should have stuck with vanilla as well in preseason.
